Smile Alternative Life-Syles, Gay Life in Coker College areas?

Hi Folks~

There is a possibility for me and my two young sons, to move to Hartsville, SC, for employment at Coker College. (Professional in the arts.)

In the 80s, I lived in Columbia, so I'm not unfamiliar with the state, but I'm hoping there is a bit more progression and acceptance for alternative life-styles (Unitarians, social activities etc...) I realize from researching there is a gay bar in Florence, and I know Columbia has a few, which illustrates a bit more progress, although I'm not a bar person. Can anyone share an area to live in Hartsville or close by that would be historic and aesthetically pleasing? Any information would be helpful!

Thanks!

I'm afraid the nearest large-scale gay life is going to be in Columbia, though I think Coker College does have a gay and lesbian student group. Florence does have one or two gay bars, but no gay organizations that I know of. Columbia has 7 or 8 gay and lesbian bars and about 15-20 organizations and a community center. Columbia is about 50-55 miles from Hartsville and Florence is about 20 miles.

I am from Hartsville and I've never heard of any gay bars or any organizations, but then again I've never really looked for them either. Waccamatt is pretty accurate about most of them probably being in Columbia. However, I'm glad that we are getting diversity and it may be a good idea to start your own? Kalmia place is beautiful, its named after Kalmia Gardens which is a kind of park with a trail. Some ppl have weddings there, but on a daily basis it can be used for jogging to get your exercise Hope this is helpful, if you have anymore questions about Hartsville feel free to ask. Welcome to Hartsville
