One ting Columbia *could* have done was to save the old Lincoln Street Viaduct as a walking trail. It would have connected what is now the greek Village to the Vista and also could have tied into the Three Rivers Greenway. You could have done one of two things with the old rail bed there. You could have saved it for a trolley that could have realistically run from Finlaw Park to below the Greek Village or saved it as a walking trail. Years later, they did reopen the old railroad tunnel.

There would have been a second oppurtunity to then shuttle some folks via rail to Capital City Stadium and Williams-Brice with a little forward thinking 25 and 30 years ago instead of "let's tear this bridge down ASAP!"

Agreed.. that was one of the City's greatest blunders of the 20th Century. That, Air South, and the big stadium lights down Main Street that dominated the skyline and obstructed the state house (they were put up by the way to make downtown feel more safe by flooding main street with light at night....)....

I would have loved to see them turn that trestle into a people mover like they have a the university of West Virginia.....I hope they dont get ride of the one by Earlewood Park.. that is a classic trestle.....

So today I was trying to catch a train coming up from Augusta and got stopped by a train at the Assembly Street crossing right at the Whaley Street intersection. You could clearly see that the "train" was actually just two engines running light. But as soon as the gates went down, people on both sides of the road started doing U-turns or hitting side streets. I just laughed and laughed, because their detour was going to actually be more inconvenient than this train.

Oh, and I caught the train i was waiting on in Cayce.
