The title pretty much says it all but I'm probably moving to Columbia in the next couple of months from the Dallas-Ft. Worth area. I was looking at the Polo Crossing apartments around the state park (among others closer to where my new job is located near Harbison/St. Andrews) and was wondering what that commute would be like. Here in DFW it regularly takes more than 1 hr to go 25 miles in rush hour. Will I run into anything like that?

A little extra info: Max of $850 (not including utilities); looking for a 2 bedroom apartment/townhome/duplex/house...really whatever type of property I can get for my money of good quality and in a safe place.

Why not just get a place in St. Andrews or Harbison then?

Well I'm not counting those areas out; I just want to get a feel and keep my options open. Plus I like to have a little buffer zone between my place of work and where I live which is why a commute wouldn't bother me.

Haven't read great things about St. Andrews.

You're looking at closer to half an hour for that drive. A little under, really.

It's one of those "you can't get there from here" situations, but my sister-in-law commuted from the other side of Lexington to Clemson Road for a few years. I don't think I-20 traffic is much of a problem at rush hour at or between the points you would be getting on and off. Actually, I just looked at a map of the metro, and the trip isn't as U-shaped and out of the wayish as I had it in my mind.

Thank you both for the input. Yeah, the route isn't exactly a straight shot but it doesn't look to me like that area is too inconvenient in terms of highway access. I'm actually going to be up there this week and I'll give it a drive and see if it's worth it.

St Andrews is a pretty big area.. Granted some of the older apartment complexes arent the best.. but there are newer ones along Harbison Blvd and also some patio communities (where there are a few rentals) along Broad River in Harbison itself. You also may want to consider the town of Lexington which is just over the lake from St. Andrews/Irmo
