That stretch around the mall on two notch is pretty rough on the eyes.

You don't lack for a title loans store on that side of town which is always a plus. LOL

Yes and No... Richland County is pouring a few hundreds of thousand dollars into make Decker Blvd an "international blvd" because of many of the various ethnic businesses that line it.. mainly from Percival to Two Notch which stops short of Columbia Mall. Richland County is also moving some of its court functions from downtown to the old Decker Mall. Richland 2 has also renovated Dent Middle School a few years ago, and a controversial apartment complex (though its market rate) was built just off Trenholm Road. So in that sense there is some interest, atleast from the government, to improve that area. From the private sector perspective...other than that new apartment complex it has been slow to respond to "improving Decker". The area around the mall is still in decline.. the residential neighborhoods behind the mall are stagnate and losing value which is lowering commercial interest in the real estate.. especially with Village of the Sandhills just up the street. The Mall itself and the plaza behind it should be redeveloped into office space and maybe some light manufacturing/warehouse and some retail and reconfigured to make it more appealing.. but that may be way down the road as long as Richland County allows new commerical development in Blythewood and Pontiac.. there will be little incentive to do anything around Columbia Mall.

I do see hope along Trenholm Road as it crosses Decker and goes north towards Two Notch.. Those large wooded areas are in Forest Acres(or soon will be) and can be developed into "in fill" to include retail and multi family residential.. If done propertly it could spur some nice development along that stretch of road though I wouldnt say it would cause the entire area to be redeveloped.

I think a nice movie theater with stadium seating and maybe a real IMAX (the legit 70mm kind) would do well there. There isn't a good theater on that side of town until you get to Sandhills. Throw in some of the entertainment options, maybe something like a Lucky Strike bowling or maybe a Top Golf. That whole corridor needs revitalized though, it's not just the mall that is in rough shape.

Richland County is starting to revitalize Decker Blvd. Parcel by parcel, it starts with public dollars, and private dollars follow.

Just curious. How is the county revitalizing Decker Blvd? Are they tearing down abandoned businesses?

Exactly.. Turning the old Dillards into an indoor theme park (Dave and Busters) type establishment even with some Frankies Fun park type of attractions would be HUGE.. There is nothing like it over in the NE side of town.. so the area would have a huge draw. Making the mall and the surrounding area more "mixed use" is the key to its success. I would even allow apartments to be constructed on some of the parking lots.. though you have to be careful on the timing. The retail, office, and entertainment need to be buzzing first before you add the residential or you may not get the type of tenants you want. Additionally.. the residential must be sited appropriately near the back of the site away from the "action" but close enough so those who live there can venture over.... No different than what was/is done and Village of the Sandhills though there residential is much closer to the retail....
