It seems like everyday we are hearing about another big name retailer or new development coming to Columbia. In the midst of this I am curious what is next? How much more are we going to hear and howmuch will this help our competitiveness amongst other cities in terms of growth?

Who knows? I'm just savoring right now. I'm just looking forward to the new pedestrian crosswalks in the Vista at Gervais and Park, Lincoln and Gadsden and the Assembly Street improvements from Blossom to Pendleton. It's not the chains that get me going and make me appreciate Columbia. I'm more of an along-the-way rose-smeller. And I'm just glad the big dead tree is gone. Oh, and another thing: I'm looking forward to obvious improvements from the penny sales tax.

I was wondering if Columbia would get a Bass Pro Shop or Cabela's. Both just announced last week they were coming to Augusta.

Eventually, but they don't interest me. I'll be glad when Costco opens.

M Grille at Lady and Pulaski appears to be on the verge of opening, and now they're upfitting the corporate headquarters in the space next door. The M Grille logo is etched into the windows of the restaurant and the lights are installed. It looks nice. The restaurant will join Trustus Theater and Publix to pull more pedestrians down Lady Street.

I fish, but not really into hunting. I know many people around here who are. With Lake Murray, I could see a market for them to come.

The state-of-the-art space observatory is coming soon to the State Museum. They're building it now.

I just looked it up and they're opening on August 6th. Yippee!

In terms of more new retailers, it's mostly an issue of Columbia playing catch-up and a lot of that has to do with retailers taking a long time in contemplating locations in the metro to which to locate. Overall, I think it's good that there are multiple viable commercial centers in the metro, but at Columbia's size, it has caused the area to lag in certain retail/restaurant options. It's good to see this starting to change in a dramatic way.

I'd hope the next big thing is an Apple store on Main. Long shot, but who knows.
