It will be interesting to watch the future of Columbiana mall.
This is THE mall in Columbia and probably the destination of 95 percent of the local population when referencing that that are going to "the mall" so I donr believe it will perform poorly over the long term despite closings here and there of some stores...

Malls are actually becoming less relevant as time goes on. This article was just in the Washington Post yesterday: The troubles at the American mall are coming to a boil - Washington Post

Haywood is a pretty good mall, but I wouldn't call it amazing. It looks terrible on the outside. It benefits from having two floors and therefore more room for retailers.

Banana Republic didn't want to leave Columbiana. I've heard a lot of other leases weren't renewed, and I bet this is leading up to the "big surprise" we heard about. Columbiana is always busy and is certainly not struggling, it's just changing the mix of stores. Whether the new mix will be "better" in our estimation remains to be seen.

Compared with the store/restaurant variety and food traffic at Columbiana Centre, Haywood Mall is indeed pretty amazing. I was there yesterday for an appointment at the Apple Store (don't even get me started), and the difference in vitality was starkly clear. I think the addition of Dave and Busters is a very good sign, and I'm hopeful that some other retailers we've craved in Columbia for literally YEARS will make the jump there.

Tell that to Charlotte NC because malls there are always packed

Not many details, but at least we know something "big" is in the works. Based on what the Banana Republic clerk told me, at least one of the tenants will be H&M.

New stores and upgrades are coming to Columbiana Centre Mall and a huge surprise is still on the way | The State

Sounds like the hoopla for Bull Street. In my opinion they should just write the article when there is an actual announcement to be made. On a sidenote, I wonder if we'll ever hear what happened to the Piggly Wiggly site on Lake Murray Boulevard in Irmo. Various rumors suggested Fresh Market or Sprouts might take over there.

Definitely not a good sign for Bull Street if H&M is changing course and opening at Columbiana instead. That's one of the few retailers that I know without a doubt was in the works for the Commons. Columbiana might make more sense for them as a business at this point in time, but I'd be really disappointed if that's where they landed.

I don't see Columbiana, Haywood, Westgate, Coastal Grand, or Northwoods going anywhere anytime soon.

With Columbiana being the only one in the region, and with the investment being put into it, I think it's in good position.

I wouldn't be surprised if they at some point tried to add a new wing, or some walkable outdoor stores, ala Southpointe in Durham.
