We all know the posted speed limit on I-20, 26, 77 and 126 is 60mph (with the southern end of I-77 at 65mph and I-77 north of SC 277 at 70mph), but it is very common to see people driving much faster than that (probably in the 75-85mph range). I have seen some cops issuing tickets on the interstate recently and was wondering how fast you can typically go without being pulled over for speeding. People doing 60mph are clearly in the minority. I try to keep it in the 75-79 range, but all the recent traffic enforcement I've seen has made me reconsider.
When I drive on I-126, the stretch from downtown Columbia to the I-26/I-20 area, I try not to go over 65 to 67 mph. I have a feeling that people who get stopped are doing in the 75 to 78 range and higher.
like with any interstate whether here or elsewhere, if i'm in a pack I may do what speed others are doing and if it's not something i'm comfortable with i'll stay in the right lane. But if i'm by myself, more likely to stand out to an officer, then i'm close to the posted limits.
Generally speaking though, i'm usually within 5 of the post (65 in a 60, 75 in a 70, and so on)
75-80 seems to be about the cutoff for getting a ticket, at least on 20 in Richland. Never really understood why a six-lane interstate through what's basically a rural area has a limit of 60 - even cops seem to cruise at 70 or faster.
I always keep it within 10 mph of the speed limit on the highway and 5 mpg on side streets (school zones excluded). I have never gotten a moving violation in South Carolina.
If you are speeding... I-77 in Cayce seems to be hotspot on the Columbia "beltway'" in addition to the interchange at I-20 and I-77.. they are always shooting radar from motorcycles and what not. I have seem them tag team a guy.. they shot radar from an overpass and the officer radioed ahead and the guy was picked off by the time he hit Clemson Road.. He and his buddy though they were home free because the motor cycle unit didnt come after them......until they saw the marked patrol car waiting for them with his lights on... SMH
A relative of mine who's in law enforcement says a rule of thumb they say is "under 9 and you're fine, over 9 and you're mine."
Heard the same thing. Keep it under 10-over on the interstate and you'll typically be OK.
