For example, Two Notch in the NE is heavily congested but isn't able to expand because of the railroad tracks. Moving the tracks out of town would open up space that would allow Two Notch, and other roads, to add additional lanes.
You do realize how very, very expensive that would be, right? Those tracks follow Two Notch for many miles. Or I should say Two Notch follow those tracks for miles and miles, since the tracks were there first and the area was developed around them.

Not only that but railroads that run through Columbia just dont serve Columbia obviously they connect other Cities both large and small that rely on rail service to support those industries.. Besides.. you can move the railroads.. but the railroads wont pay one red cent to do so.. Therefore you would have to pay to move them, acquire new land, and then rebuild them. Not to mention anyone that owns property especially a home would scream bloody murder to learn that you were moving an active railroad next to the home/business. THe environmental review that would preceed this effort would take years, cost millions and be caught up in law suit after law suit and that assumes that the railroad would even go along with it...Then the taxpayers would crusify any politico that agrees to use taxpayers dollars to spend on such a project and reward them with a quick exit from their seat. That alone would kill any utterance of this type of concept...since the rate of return for doing so for the gubmit wouldnt justify the cost....
That line past Two Notch serves an industry just past Clemson Road as well as the large industry in Lugoff. It would be billions of dollars to move those tracks... but no train that goes that way actually crosses Assembly anyway. They come from Cayce, past the Amtrak Station over that bridge on N. Main, past Fountaine to get next to Two Notch.

That one would be blocking Huger...I heard there may be plans to fix that crossing as well?
There may be, but I have not heard. Not sure how you would go about fixing that one. The trains that stop on Huger are typically the auto racks going to the car lot down in Dixiana. They're too long to fit into the yard sometimes.
