Government is a significant driver of Columbia's economy, and it is hard to envision an ambitious project launching here without government (particularly USC) playing a role.
And I completely agree just like rtp, we just have to utilize USC so it benefits the city rather than let USC run everything

IBM and Fluor are the interested parties on the Horizon II lease. Fifty jobs at first and about 450 jobs over the next few years are in play.

IBM seems to have an affinity for being trail blazers when it comes to this sort of thing. It was responsible for the first wave of tech jobs in both Raleigh and Charlotte. Both companies would make a major impact and it's good to see a company that already has a presence in the state be one of them. I said long ago that Innovista and ICAR have the potential to feed off each other and complement each other and I hope this represents the beginning of such a relationship.

Wonderful news for Horizon II and Columbia overall. I hope this shows developers that Columbia needs more office buildings with more than 200,000 sq. ft. of space.

Yeah the office market is really tight right now. I expect some more office development to take place soon.

Yeah. I wish I could see an office tower plannedin the next DDRC agenda. Too bad that wish won't come true. But seeing IBM and Fluor have office space in downtown was mind blowing.

Maybe we'll see a 787 land here like in Austin soon too. lol

How will they build to suit the needs for office space? Is this something where they'll build 50,000 sq. feet of space at a time or will it be a large multi-story office building?

The state board approved the contracts, one big step closer to reality. Apparently more than 500 IT jobs could be in play. This could be a great catalyst to other buildings.

Where did you see that the state board approved the contracts? That was fast work. The article in The State said the Upstate guy on the board delayed the vote.
