Is Columbia the city in SC with the most civilian federal employee presence, or is there another city in SC that owns that distinction?

Well, considering that the federal building downtown and Fort Jackson are full of federal employees, I'd semi-confidently venture to say that the answer to your question is yes.

Charleston has an Air Force and Navy base, but I don't think their combined (civilian) population is larger than Fort Jackson's and the Strom Thurmond Federal Building's. Both cities have a VA center as well.

I've been googling away with no luck. I think it's Charleston.

Sumter has Shaw AFB and the Third Army and all the civilian jobs that go along with that. But I'm guessing it's smaller than Columbia. I suspect it's probably close to Charleston.

If I had to guess, I'd say
1. Columbia
2. Charleston
3. Sumter
4. Beaufort

Edit.....
Second guessing myself. Charleston is a port city with international access. Customs, Border Patrol, Coast Guard and others as well. charleston may be 1st.

Thank you all. If I were to get a transfer to SC, I was wondering which city would be the most likely place. The regional office is in Atlanta, Georgia but they have satellite offices all around the Southeast - none in SC however. If there is already a large federal civilian workforce in the area, in established federal buildings in downtown Columbia, then I guess that would be the most likely place.

Not counting military and military-related jobs (Charleston has more of those than Columbia does.), I'd say Columbia is it, especially in terms of downtown federal jobs in office buildings. I have been unable to find it in black and white with google searches, though.

That info mixes retirees in with employees, so Columbia and Charleston are probably essentially about the same in number of federal employees, since I would think Charleston has more federal retirees.

I forgot that Charleston also has a Homeland Security USCIS field office and the State Department has a passport center there too.

This is really a good question. I don't know which city has more feds anymore. I'd be interested in knowing the answer to this too.

If you want a fed job in Columbia, get one. If you want a fed job in Charleston, get one.
