So I previously asked about the Lugoff-Elgin area. My family is looking for a 3-4 berm house, really good schools, and some space between us and our neighbors. We don't like the city and are looking forward to more greenery, space, and less traffic. What can you tell me about Camden? Is the Lugoff-Elgin area viewed to be a nicer area or is Camden ok too? What areas of Columbia are within a decent commute to Shaw AFB but with good schools? We'd like to keep the housing price under $200k.

Comparing Lugoff-Elgin and Camden is like comparing Left Twix with Right Twix.. its fundamentally the same...

Ok.. maybe they are not identical.. Camden, IMHO, appears to be more along the lines of Historic Homes and neigborhoods downtown.. then maybe homes built between the 1950s and 1970s in the surrounding outer neighborhoods. Lugoff Elgin on the other hand is becoming apart of the sprawling NE Richland County where you can find more homes built in the 2000s and tract developments along with scattered older homes that may have been considered 'country homes' or part of farmland type of developments. From what I have heard, Lugoff Elgin schools are better than Camden's.. Camden being the older of the two has what some may consider as 'urban blight' and some pockets of poverty which may impact its school ratings.. but others may have more insight. So.. a new home on a large lot in the Lugoff Elgin south of I-20 may be a good option if you want a semi rural feel....

In terms of commuting to Shaw AFB and a home under $200k... the world is your oyster. You can get alot for your money at that price point.

Just curious.. why not just move to Sumter... which is a larger version of Camden and your commute will be a lot less???

I cannot find out much information on the schools in Sumter, cites like schooldigger.com and greatschools.com stating "insufficient test data." And I've heard crime rates are higher in Sumter, and have heard it's not a great area in general by some other military folks who've been there or known others who have been there. We might check it out while we're there house hunting, though. Thanks for the input, it continues to seem as though Lugoff-Elgin is more of a fit for us.
