Wife has job at USC if she wishes to accept it. We are in no rush, job will be there until she accepts of declines. We would be leaving PA to move to SC in and around the college. 25-30 minute commute max. What areas should we look at homewise that would be nice communities to raise 8/5 year old boys. Need golfing nearby, good schools, parks, recreation, shopping. 175,000-265,000 for housing. I am a teacher but have golf as an avenue to make money if it takes a while to find a teaching job there. We have been to Columbia once, en route to augusta. Any help would be appreciated
University Hill, Wales Garden, and Shandon are the in-town neighborhoods closest to the university. There are a lot of professors who live in this area. The schools are excellent and you can find homes in the upper-end of your price range. Getting to a golf course will take 15-20 minutes of driving, but everything else you listed is within easy reach.
If you don't care about being in-town, Lake Carolina could be a good fit. Really, few places in Columbia would fall outside of the commute you're looking for.
Look around in Lexington. The schools are great, there are 4+ golf courses within 15 minutes, and finding a spacious and well appointed home within your price range wouldn't take long. Also, new schools are popping up all over Lexington and existing schools are constantly hiring, you likely wouldn't have an issue finding a job as a teacher.
Also, I commute to downtown Columbia daily and it hardly ever takes more than 20- 25 minutes.
Lake Carolina is a great option with excellent schools. Crickentree golf course is right across the street (The Golf Club of South Carolina). Lots of USC faculty and staff live at LC because of the schools. It also has lots of parks, playgrounds, 2 pools, walking trails, neighborhood Y, etc. You'll have plenty of good options in the Columbia metro area and plenty of friendly people whether you're in town, in the the Northeast (LC, Spring Valley, Wildewood, Blythewood, etc.), Irmo, Lexington. Good luck!
Irmo: Dutch Fork area
Northeast: areas zoned for Blythewood or Spring Valley feeders
In town: Flora and Dreher zones
