Hi, I am new to this board, and after a quick view, did not see anything about the area South of Columbia or Orangeburg.

We are considering a move to the area - My job will actually be in Orangeburg. I would like to stay within a 30 minute commute. We will be visiting the area this weekend, and I am looking for suggestions on which areas we should consider.

We do not have any children. We have a large dog, and 3 cats (indoor all the time). We want to be close to groceries, convenient to casual restaurants, and some convenient shopping.

I will be renting an apartment for the first several months until our house in Ohio can sell, but will then need to rent a home for about a year.

Whether renting or buying, the home will need to be a three bedroom, two bath home. When buying, we would like to stay in the $150's

Any ideas or help is greatly appreciated!

Did you try the "search forum" button? There are many posts about Orangeburg. It's a place of great poverty, crime and a sad history but parts of it are beautiful. Stay away from North, which , although the birthplace of Eartha Kitt, is typical of the poor, meth-ridden small towns of the South. Start reading the Orangeburg Times & Democrat online. It's my reality check when I start getting too sentimental about SC. But you can't beat the real estate prices. I hope you've had a chance to visit before making a commitment because it's not for everyone. Please let us know how it works out for you. BTW Gene Robinson, the Pulitzer Prize- winning journalist, I think he's on MSNBC, is from Orangeburg and Rep. Jim Clyburn's district bisects the town with the neighboring district of Joe "You Lie!" Wilson so the politics are interesting. Rather than look toward Columbia you might look more toward Lake Marion which is beautiful and I believe there's a post here that their school is pretty good. Don't miss the Lone Star BBQ on Saturday when the local folks play music. Again, let us know where you end up. Best of luck.

You'll want to search around St. Matthews/Gaston/Swansea/Red Bank-Lexington area for a 30 minute commute. If you want to stretch it to 45 minutes you could do W.Columbia or SE Columbia.

Default Columbia vs. Orangeburg

Hello....Let me welcome you, in advance, to SC!

I live in West Columbia and until recently worked in Orangeburg. From this side of Columbia, my commute was about 40 minutes. However, the traffic conditions are erratic on that busy stretch of interstate and times can be extended.

Unless you are programmed for city life, I would probably look for a home in Orangeburg. You are more apt to find one in the price range you mentioned and with dogs you may want to look in some of the rural areas just outside of Orangeburg.

It is located between Columbia and Charleston...You are just over an hour away from the coast and can have a "small town" feel while being reasonably close to everything you need.

Those are my thoughts...Best of luck in your move and we look forward to having you down with us!

Regards,

Eddie Parker
West Columbia, SC

Thanks for all of the advice.

My wife and I are actually in town now. We are staying near Fort Jackson, but spent most of the day in Orangeburg. We found the West side of Orangeburg very pleasant.

jwind - We are moving from a rural area outside of Cincinnati, OH. We are at least 20 minutes both a Grocery Store, and a McDonalds, and that is the closest we are to anything.

I would move to Orangeburg around the Prince of Orange Mall and WALMART - there are some decent neighborhoods there.

North is a very small town (pop. under 800) with little to offer (so is Orangeburg), unless one is looking for an affordable house. Actually I have seen towns with much more affordable real estate than North, such as Bishopville, SC. North has got a new DOLLAR GENERAL store as I noticed driving past to Savannah last weekend.

By the way, is city bashing allowed in this forum? Have you seen meth labs around Columbia? We have studied police reports for the last couple years and a bunch of meth labs were closed down recently. The fact that a town or a city demolishes buildings speaks for itself - it means the town cares to keep the place clean and in order.

If a person wants to move between Columbia and Orangeburg then the closest locations would be either Gaston, Swansea, North or Neeses.

I hope the moderator removes the posts that bash cities and towns. City/town bashing should take no place at City-Data forums.

The previous poster apparently is new to the forum and does not see the difference between "city-bashing" and honest reporting. If people want to hear nothing but sunshine and roses they can consult the Chamber of Commerce websites, not C-D, where people go for honest responses.

Thumbs up to your own self (you-to-you), I may be wrong! ;-) It appears that "meth-ridden" does not qualify as city-bashing, even if no meth labs detected in the area lately as per police reports. Our Corporation would have not moved to the area if it was "meth-ridden". If that's "honest reporting" then please present facts and addresses of known meth labs. The entire U.S. could as well qualify as "meth-ridden" in such case.

God bless the all-knowing Corporation!. Your logic is flawed and you are free to believe what you want. Here's another thumbs-up.
