Aiken is definitely more charming than Lexington. Lexington is full of rednecks and cheap suburban houses.

Moved to Lexington from California a few years back and have been happy with the choice. Good schools and low crime were definitely the draw for me. In my opinion Lexington folks aren't snobby at all, but obviously everyone is entitled to their own opinion.

Thanks for your input folks about the towns and schools. Sounds like Lexington and Aiken are both locations to consider. Would love to take a trip down and visit the areas.

Default A few generalities

Hi Liz,

I'm originally from NY (born in the Bronx), lived in NJ, Baltimore, San Antonio, Chicago, IN; now I'm retired, and I live in Irmo, which is just next door to Lexington. I love it here. The land is beautiful (rolling hills and lots of trees), roads are generally uncrowded, housing is very affordable, property taxes are low, winters are mild (but summers are hot). I just moved from IN last September. From this forum, I found a real estate agent, Mel Coker, who was as good as it gets in terms of knowledge of the area and a sincere regard for his client. He's a real good source of info. (No, I have absolutely no association with him.) I don't know much about Lexington, even though it's next door. But Irmo is a real good bet IMO.

Best of luck.

Lexington is a good area to live. I know lots of people who live there and love it. I am not too into the suburbs, but I realize the city is not for everyone, so if that is what you like, I would recommend this area fully!

I often think of Lake Murray as the Long Island of the Midlands... LOL (in a good way)

Docpit45, thank you for the name of your realtor. I will keep him in mind if we are serious about going down there. And from living in many different places, and based on your experiences, it sound like Lexington is a great place. I think I will look into Irmo as well.

Jordo06, I will look into Lake Murray as well. Thank you. I am from Long Island, so I prefer suburbs over city living.

I should also mention that I lived in the Pocono's one summer with my dad, so I've had a taste of some rural life. The burbs are more for me though.
