I just found out I'll be relocating to Columbia, SC at the end of the month for work. I am wondering what would be some safe areas to rent a house in within about a 30 minute drive of downtown? Ideally looking to rent something for around $1,500. How is traffic getting to and from downtown? It will be my wife and I and our two dogs, so only looking for houses. Thanks in advance!

With those parameters, you have lots of options. You can live in a decent house downtown for that price. Check out Elmwood Park, Earlewood, Rosewood, Laurel Hill, or Forest Acres. You may be able to find something in Shandon as well. All of those neighborhoods are roughly considered "downtown" (ie, no need to get on an interstate to get downtown).

Thanks, will look in that area. The area around downtown is considered safe then? Just asking because I'm from Miami and would never choose to live near downtown here. Is NE Arcadia Lakes far from downtown/ a good neighborhood? Saw a very nice house with a great yard there. Sorry for all the questions.

The neighborhoods I named are safe. Columbia is fortunate to have safe, desirable neighborhoods around the downtown core. Arcadia Lakes is a nice area, probably 20 mins or so from downtown depending on traffic and exact neighborhood.
