Hello,
I have a similar question about moving instead mine is Greenville or Sevierville, TN. We have visited Greenville and really liked it. The people seem so nice and friendly and Downtown is the best I've seen. We also love the mountains and have doubts which place is a better move from FL. We have to keep in mind our jobs. I am in the Finance industry, banking or finance companies. My husband works as a parts consultant for a Dealership. We enjoy going to restaurants, theater, movies and as far as outdoors we love to walk, boating, and would like to learn kayaking. In Greenville we fell in love with different areas and great subdivisions. We have no young kids going to school but still want a nice area.
Please help us...............we are somewhat confused. We need to put our house on the market but can't just make our minds.
Thanks for your feedback..........be real!

All of the above are available in both cities, you'll need to visit both places to see which feels like home. There are probably more banking and finance jobs in Columbia. Of course there are plenty of vehicle dealerships in both cities. I'd visit both cities; make sure you spend some time on Main Street in Greenville and in The Vista and Five Points in Columbia. If you like both cities, see where you can find a job that you like.

If your in banking you might want to check out the Carolina First headquarter under constuction here, also Palmetto bank which is also headquartered in Greenville.

Wachovia and B of A aren't doing well, but credit unions and community banks are always an option, too.

^Just about all of the larger banks are taking hits these days (Wachovia, BOA, BB&T, Citi, etc.), but you're right about the smaller regional banks and credit unions.

Where to move
Thanks everyone for your feedback!
The reason why I want banking is because it's better than finance company ( what I currently do/sub prime) want to get away from that. I have worked many years in banking and when we got here (panhandle) the only job that would pay close to what I had in Naples, FL was a finance company. I had never worked with sub prime before and can't wait to leave that behind, not fun.
We have been to Greenville and it's really a nice and clean city. Looks like everything is new.........the Downtown is the best I have ever seen. You should be very proud!
Waccamatt you mentioned Columbia, we have never been there and isn't there more opportunity in Greenville? I would check into the banks mentioned and find out what they have to offer.
One little problem is to sell our home in FL. It's getting harder and I just found out we have another house in our subdivision in foreclose. I live close to AL, panhandle and my husband and I are dieing for the change. The humidity and heat is getting worse every year. The economy has hit us really bad, low paying jobs and people without jobs. I love this forum. Your honest opinions are so welcomed.
Hope things change soon!

Fun4, since you posted in the Columbia forum and asked about Columbia and Greenville, that's what we tried to answer. As far as opportunity, both cities probably offer similar levels of opportunity, but in different areas. Columbia is a college town with 8 colleges and universities and it is the state capital so there are a lot of jobs in education and government. Columbia is also a large insurance hub with 3 large insurance companies based here. Greenville's background is more industrial so you will see more jobs there in industry, including Michelin and BMW. IMO, the most important thing about making a move is the ability to earn a living, unless you are a student or retired, so that is where I would begin my search if I were you.

So, you work for a bank? Carolina First is building a new $100 million headquarters in Greenville that will create 600 new jobs.
