In the era of smart phone, twitter, blogs, and technology.. why would you want to risk this type of exposure that will forever haunt cyberspace with your photo.. Now honest mistakes can happen when it come to taxes and certain types of required legal disclosures.. but out right flagrant FRAUD is something entirely different. I suspect this is far from over.

The FBI, SLED, and related government watch dogs have set up shop in Columbia.. starting with the Councilman Cromartie affair; Pinson at SC State.. which Mayor Steve just seemed barely to escape; City employee Tony Lawton; and now this.. Lexington is not immune either.. let us not forget Sheriff Metts and Lexington Town Councilman Danny Fraizer...With everyone knowing this.. why do anything illegal or unethical.. Its likely that these past deeds are now coming to light.. going forward hopefully we will see less of this....
Sadly this started long before that. This was just the first high profile bust and it was all the way back in 1990:

Maybe this explains why the penny tax project outside my building has taken months to finish repaving a 250 ft stretch of road.

From what I've heard from reputable sources, Brian Newman's tax issues are NOT related to the penny corruption claims, but were uncovered as part of the penny audit. They are not related except to the extent that his failure to paybacks was discovered because of the penny tax audit. This certainly makes the news reports about Newman's taxes more understandable.

Newman gives up $398,000 contract, steps down as lawyer for penny tax program

Newman gives up $398,000 contract, steps down as lawyer for penny tax program | The State

Newman was a "subcontractor" and expected to do $400k worth of work on the Penny program over 5 years.

Might be legal, but reeks of a payoff.

Glad we are not like the republicans in Wisconsin. http://www.nytimes.com/2015/10/27/op...lker.html?_r=0 I think all cheating needs to be stopped... Republican and Democrat! But if we don't take time to educate ourselves and vote, it will never happen.

I think the big problem in local elections is that so few people vote. People need to be more engaged in the political process.
