I had a middle school teacher who was born and raised in West Columbia and only came to Columbia to teach at our School. She was a staunch Republican and devout Christian.. and hated Jimmy Carter for that decision sign the treaty to hand it back over to Panama for fear that they would become a banana republic for the Soviet Union and allow their navy to sail through it and blockade America on both Coasts.....I remember when the Space Shuttle was flown over Columbia on its way to DC.. She had tears in her eyes and told us that the America is the greatest and smartest country in the world..but she is afraid that communist will bring it down within her life time.. She was in her 60s then and this was in the early 80s
Lol, very funny. I talked a lot with my girlfriend about this development and my hopes that it would go through. I complained about the citizens complaining about the fact that they didn't want increased traffic and "noise", despite the fact they are less than a mile from the state capital, central business district, largest university in one of the largest cities in South Carolina. Did they expect peace and quiet, with minimal traffic? It boggles my mind. If they don't like it, maybe they would like to move in a more rural, quiet area away from the city's center.

Funny story about your teacher. It doesn't surprise me. A lot of people in general are afraid of change, whether it be this Brookland development or politically. A lot of these same people (and yes, they're still around today) can't distinguish the difference between socialism and communism to begin with.

That's hysterical! And I mean that in the "funny" sense as well as the "that woman was gripped by hysteria" sense.

It is bizarre to me when I meet a certain type of older person from the outside-Columbia Midlands who view the Capital City as a den of hedonistic liberalism. I used to work with a woman from a long-time Blythewood family who talked about Columbia as if it were Amsterdam.

Yeah.. New Brookland and "old" West Columbia.. which is that area west of State Street along Augusta Streets and all the Alphabet Aves (B, C, D, E Aves) all the way out to Triangle City (where Zestos is) was full of folks that had a anti "big city" attitude or more so wanting the area to remain a small town in feel (which is certainly their right). Cayce was the same way.. but evolved over the years.. maybe a little quicker than West Columbia. This development will likely change that dynamic even more for West Columbia.. we will see if the polticos survive the next election or if someone from the "old school" surfaces and runs on a "slow growth" platform....

Wait, so the same people who hate that the government gives free things to people, want to be able to park for free while a landowner goes without pay???

I am always surprised by people who live "in-town," and expect peace and quiet. They are free to trade houses with me! I made a poor decision and now I find where I live too quiet and pretty damn boring. There are plenty of different types of places in Columbia where you can leave your McMansion, drive your SUV to a huge parking lot eat at a chain restaurant and go into a big box store and buy all the dumb crap you want. Why can't a park of the area be for people who would perfect a dense, walkable area with parking ramps and things to do???

Plot twist: the city owns the lot XD That's what happens in places where there is old money.

BUT the deal was approved. Hopefully the people who complain about parking will move to a farm or someplace rural.

Uber is fantastic. I use it all the time in Columbia. Parking is easier here than a lot of other places, but the convenience of not having to search for a street spot or pay for a lot is worth it. I live downtown so I can get almost anywhere for $7.

That is hilarious. That river is ten times wider in its ideological difference than in its physical width.
