Just curious, why did you first consider Columbia? Do you have family connections here or for other reasons?

I hope it won't be too much of a culture shock for you.

Columbia is a pretty good sized manufacturing and logistics hub and there's also USC, a major university and the biggest in the state by a good margin. I'd also look at the Midlands Technical College system if you're looking for a professor position somewhere. Unless you've looked them up, taxes, cost of living, and housing costs are probably going to really surprise you with how low they are compared to most areas of New Jersey.

South Carolina in general has plenty of options available of course but Columbia would be just as good. There are plenty of nice neighborhoods in Columbia where you can good value for your money. There are a few neighborhoods where values are driven up just because of location. Make sure to look around in surrounding areas besides just the Columbia city. Irmo, Lexington, Cayce, West Columbia, etc. are good suburban options.

I'm a student so I can't really comment about being a transplant.
