Santee Cooper, SCE&G halt work on $14B South Carolina nuclear power deal | Business | postandcourier.com

Quote:
COLUMBIA — Santee Cooper and South Carolina Electric & Gas will halt work immediately on two nuclear reactors in the Midlands, ending months of deliberation over the future of the troubled project that already has cost consumers billions of dollars.

Santee Cooper, a state-owned electricity provider, said early Monday afternoon it would stop construction on the partially completed power units in Fairfield County, which have cost South Carolina utility customers nearly $9 billion so far.

Afterward, SCE&G parent SCANA Corp. announced that it, too, had decided to scrap the project.

“We arrived at this very difficult but necessary decision following months of evaluating the project from all perspectives to determine the most prudent path forward," SCANA CEO Kevin Marsh said in a written statement. "Many factors outside our control have changed since inception of this project."
What a disaster.

I read in another article that about 5,000 people have been employed on this site.

I hope it's hidden away out of site so that Fairfield County residents don't have to look at it. The only thing uglier than a nuclear power plant is an unfinished, abandoned one.

You can't see it from the road but maybe a little piece can be seen from the lake. They're still working on the base area and haven't put up vertical walls yet so it shouldn't be an eyesore.
