Just curious what are the rural area in your mind?

10,000 population or less? or 30K population? Are you working in EMT richland county or lexington county.

Is your wife going to want to drive all the way into the city every day to go to class? Probably the easiest drive from a rural area that is nice would be from northern Richland County; perhaps Cedar Creek or Blythewood, though Blythewood is starting to become populated.

I was thinking that too...or even Gaston or Swansea...maybe Dixianna....the commute to USC wouldn't be that bad and the setting is kind of rural

I'd say West Columbia. See you have a ton of different opinions. Give us a little more info so we can narrow it down.

We currently reside in Maine so we would like to be in as rural as we can and still not be in the sticks so i guess around 10-12K would be fine. I have not accepted a job yet, you may think we are crazy but we have never been to SC, but we are willing to give it a try and are welcoming the warmth and lack of snow, up here in maine our town has already had 178 inchs of snow this winter and we are gettning a storm today expected to drop six more inchs and than another storm this weekend worth upwards of 12+ inches.
thank you all so much for your help, If you have any other sudgestions of areas not even in the columbia are we are more than happy to hear them my wife wants to live down there a year befor she dedicates the time and money to school.

From another fellow Mainer, I don't think you are crazy one bit. What's crazy is living up here in this arctic tundra. I am seriously considering making the move as soon as I get some money freed up and the bills taken care of.

178" of Snow! AGHHHHHHHHHHH!!!!

If your wife has not already committed to the USC campus in Columbia they have a smaller campus in Aiken that would be more of a small town vibe. Lots of farms in that area. Not sure about EMT work.

You will love calling your family/friends in March to tell them you are out in shorts! South Carolina is a lovely little state.

I could agree with "scyogi" also... Aiken has more of a larger small town vibe and it's not too rural and the surrounding area and it's location isn't bad either. Aiken substains on its own, but Augusta, GA is in it's backyard [only 15miles away] if you wanted a little more to do. Columbia is also only 55miles away and you are within a 2.5hr drive to Atlanta.

I hope that helps....as much as i would love to have y'all in the Columbia area, i want y'all to enjoy South Carolina overall the most...Just giving you more options....

Check out West Columbia and the areas around Hway 378 and 1 on the Columbia side of Lexington. Will have a bit more rural feel, traffic will be manageable to USC, and still close in and affordable.

An alternative would be the SE Columbia area off of Garners Ferry to Leesburg.
