^^^^

Well MzFloridagurl did you know that the KKK was created in Tennesse? Did you know following the Klan Act, South Carolina was key in basically destroying all Klan influence in it's state. Did you know that the 2nd wave of KKK was started back up in Atlanta, GA @ Stone Mountain and the main offices for them were in Dallas Texas and Little Rock, Arkansas?

Contrary to the flag issues that are have been shined on heavily by the media...the KKK actually was the least active in SC. Now i'm not saying they weren't and still aren't here...but i can tell you they have way more members in Oregon, Ohio and other states moreso than they have in SC.

I can tell you that this is one of the stereotypes about SC that i dislike the most...SMH...but it's our state legislators fault [in recent times] that didn't help this situation any....

sorry for the history lesson .

When I asked this question when I was in the Army, a few other people also said that. Some others said cotton fields.

Mzfloridagurl: Since you are a 16-year-old high school student living in Tampa, I guess stereotypes do exist for you. When you finish HS, it would be a great opportunity for you to travel around and see some different cities. If you travel to Columbia, I'm quite sure you will not be bumping into the KKK - so don't worry about it. Columbia is a very diverse city, and I think you would like it.

Very true... we know how to take criticism about our city because we all know that it's not perfect...nor is it for everyone. That's the truth about any city in the world and that's one of the things we accept. I'm not sure of the true intentions of this thread, but i know that my intentions is to agree or disagree with comments and if i feel i can give some insight on why it's true or not...then i shall. But you weren't wrong for what you said....and trust me...if you offended someone you would have know...but i think we responded so quickly to that because we want to know how people came to that conclusion about our state. Was it an Family Guy episode? Was it a Celebrity Death Match show? Was it just the image of being lumped with Mississippi, and Alabama during those times.

I can tell you i'm not a Caucasian person, but i am a South Carolinian...which means i have love for my state and it's just sad that so many people have that image of SC...like it was the KKK breeding ground...lol

KKK breeding ground..I'm with you..LOL!
Like I said before, the KKK is just about as big as Jay Leno's chin as far as the group being in SC. I've been studying racism for the past two years and know more about the different groups now. You have the white nationalist, the white socialist, the skins, etc. I rarely hear anything about the KKK now.

There are hate groups everywhere. I really don't think South Carolina is a hotbed for racist activity. I'm sure you'll find this type of thing no matter where you go. It is shocking how some people are not willing to tolerate something they don't understand. As I said, even as progressive as Houston may appear to be, it is very backward in a lot of beliefs and views - and this is a city of millions.
