Exactly what I have been trying to get out of him ever since he began posting such insanity on this forum. I see nothing wrong with the New South that is emerging from the intolerant and backward Old South. Today you can find a great mixture of cultures instead.

Right, because every other culture is better than the Southern one.
Thanks for that, it all makes sense now.

Which area of the US stands out the most? I seriously doubt anyone is going to say the Northwest. No one can seriously say that The South is no different from any other part of the US.
What's being destroyed?
The accent(wouldn't it be boring and a shame if that went away?), manners, friendliness, simplicity, food, woods, music, pride etc.
That mixture of cultures comes at the expense of the Southern one. I personally would find it to be a real shame if New York lost its accent and flavor.(although that works differently there because of the mixtures of cultures)
Skyliner, I'm not posting insanity just because you disagree with me.

New York City is one of the great melting pots of the world; has it lost its accent, its culture or its food? Keeping outsiders away would be one of the worst things an area could do. I'm excited that South Carolina is growing faster than ever before - only good can come from this trend as long as the growth isn't so fast that schools and transportation can't keep pace. So far I think we're doing all right.

While I don't often agree with you, this could be the first post that I do agree with. South Carolina is growing very quick, but I can already see some of the negitive things about it. For example, in an effort to boost school ratings, most SC schools have dropped the arts/music/etc. classes in order to focus strictly on academics. I've went to several schools in different parts of the state and they both had that same issue - core classes only, little to nothing of anything else. Another issue is the sprawl, however, that problem is not exclusive to SC. Transportation issues are already hitting the state hard as well, especially in the Upstate and Charleston area (and the North Augusta/Aiken area during Master's week).

The sprawl is a terrible problem, but I see that as much a result of lax zoning as I do because of population growth. I would much rather see our cities and towns becoming more dense than to simply see people moving further and further out in the suburbs so that they can have an acre of land. I am a proponent of very strong zoning regulations in order to limit the amount of sprawl. There is still going to be some, but we have got to rein it in. If we were encouraging vertical instead of horizontal growth and mixing in much better public transportation, South Carolina would be much better off. I hope we realize that before it's too late. Charlotte is just now beginning to see the merits of public transportation, but look how bad the traffic became there before the first trickles of help arrived.

I see you're from New Jersey. Why would you care about the culture? Of course you would think the growth is a good thing. If I lived in some other US state just like any other I'd think the same way.

Well, let's see, I've lived in South Carolina since I was 8 years old - where have I lived longer? If you read my post you'd see that I don't think having other people move in does anything to destroy the "culture". Change is necessary for growth. Do you want to continue to be stagnant and have everything remain the same? Why do you think rural South Carolina is so poor? Because there was no forward thinking there and resistance to change. Luckily it isn't like that as much in the urban areas.
Why would being from New Jersey make someone NOT care about culture. New Jersey is actually a great state with lots of culture and one of the highest standards of living in the country.

Perhaps you need to get out and experience other cultures in other places then. I understand it is sometimes difficult to witness change, however it is unstoppable with our current state and local governments, therefore we must learn to embrace the many positive elements it brings into our lives. The change so far has been very good for this state.

Apparently guestposter has placed a stereotype on you without knowing anything about you. Don't worry, he did the same to me not too long ago, but I quickly learned to shrug it off as ignorance.
