The Summit is generally considered a good community. The community is bisected by a nicely landscaped boulevard (Summit Parkway) with sidewalks, and also contains a county public library branch, a pediatrician's office, a church, and couple of other businesses.
You would be in the heart of the Richland 2 school district, considered a very good one. Depending on where you live in The Summit, children are assigned to one of three elementary schools: Rice Creek, North Springs, and coming Fall 2008, the new Bridge Creek Elementary School. The middle school would be either Summit Parkway (located in The Summit itself) or Kelly Mill. All of The Summit is zoned for Ridge View High School. However, Richland 2 has many school choice and magnet programs, so if you want to send your child to a different one than the one for which you are zoned, you have the option of sending them to another school or program (many of the schools you would be zoned for have special/magnet programs anyways, so check out your neighborhood schools first).
Your biggest issue will probably be traffic, but that is to be expected in any growing suburban area. On the other hand, The Summit is very conveniently located to the Village at Sandhill, a large mixed-use/outdoor mall development, and the surrounding shopping/commercial areas on Two Notch and Clemson Roads.

Sounds great! We are also looking at a home in Ashley Ridge? I haven't heard anything about this sub. Would you happen to know anything about this one?
Thanks again!

Verify all school zones with the school district!

The Ashley Ridge neighborhood is zoned for Sandlapper Elementary, since it is further west of The Summit.
In case you're wondering, here's where I'm getting the school zone info:
http://www.richland2.org/lib/files/D...ce%20Areas.pdf
Always check with your realtor and/or the school district directly (preferably the latter, they will have the most up-to-date info, especially important for fast-growing neighborhoods).
Here's an interactive mapping tool the district has where you can input your (future) address:
2008-2009 Academic School Year - School Address Processing System. A U.S. Computing Inc Product
Good luck!

I'll definitely check with the realtor on the school and other specifics. Thanks for the great links.
Does Ashley ridge have a community center at all?
Thanks again!

I'm not trying to throw any salt on the area. I stay in the summit area and they have great schools around the area. Some of the houses look somewhat the same, every other house is almost the same. When we first moved there I had to make sure I was going to the right house .
A lot of shopping centers so you won't have to worry about that.
Also one thing that might stick out is the traffic can be somewhat of a hassle. In the mornings and evenings it can be real difficult. It sometimes takes me almost 15 minutes to get out of the community even though the traffic light is only 30 seconds away. Back to back traffic during the hours of 7:30am-9:30am and 4:30pm-6pm, but only real drawback.
