Default Moving to South Carolina from Hawaii

Hi there. My family are moving to South Carol. from Hawaii. We have lived in Hawaii for a few years. One of the things I like about Hawaii is that the crime rate is pretty low. It is definitely a beautiful place. I was wondering if someone can tell me what the crime rate is like in South Carol. I gather from what my research on the net that South Carolina is one of the best places to live, considering its crime rate. Is this correct for those who live there? We will be living in the Southeast side of Columbia, near the Fort Jackson base. Please, if anyone can help I would really appreciate it. Thanks in advance.

The crime rate overall is listed as very high in Columbia. I think this stems from the fact that Columbia reports all crimes and many of our reports tend to be domestic disputes where the cops are called. As long as you aren't in a bad area the crime isn't bad but I can't guarantee you won't ever have something bad happen to you. I've lived in SC my whole life, mostly the midlands and I've yet to ever be a victim of a crime.

I'll second what Brandon had to say. For some reason, a great deal of the crime in South Carolina (and the south in general) is in the form of domestic disputes, so if you get along with your family and stay away from the few bad neighborhoods, you should be ok. Generally speaking, southeast Columbia doesn't have a lot of problems. Do you know which neighborhood you'll be in?

Anyone moving to SC needs to check the graduation rate of the public schools - it is the lowest in the nation - only 50% of the children graduate in SC. Go to edweek.org and check out the "Diploma Counts" program by Bill and Melinda Gates.

So is your solution for changing this based on trying to accentuate the negatives of our state in hopes of convincing them not to move here?
