Columbia- Where to stay?
Hi everyone! My hubby and I are looking to move to SC, most likely the columbia area, this summer. We will be visting in June but can only stay for 3 days. There seems to be a ton of hotels, but I'd like to know which part of town should we stay in? We would like to drive and walk all around the city, and really get a feel for what it has to offer. Can anyone suggest a part of town that is basically in the middle of it all? Any suggestions would be helpful. Thanks!!!

I would recommend staying at one of the hotels in The Vista, maybe the Hilton or the Hampton Inn, that way you'll be within walking distance of a number of shops, restaurants and nightlife. You will also be within easy driving distance of the rest of the city.

I would suggest staying in the area of town that you'll be most interested in moving to. Have you decided or are you open to anywhere? The Vista is nice as Matt suggested.

Lake Murray - Lake House Rental
Hello Everyone:
We're going to visit Lake Murray on June 21st thru 28th. We're checking out the area for retirement, and if we like it, and can afford it, we hope to buy a lot on the lake. Does anyone know of a clean, small lake house we can rent, in a good area. There are only 2 of us, and so many of the lake houses we've seen on the net sleeps upwards of 6 people. We would like wi-fi. We plan to check out all the surrounding areas, i.e., Lexington, Columbia, Chapin, Irmo, Prosperity. Also any leads on boat rentals? Thanks so much for your help.

There are several locations to rent boats.
As far as housing that could be more difficult. You would probably have more success for short term looking at a few of the condo areas around Lake Murray. You may have to call a few rentals and ask if they'll do a week. There is also VIP travel in Lexington. I'm not sure if they do things like that but you might be able to google them or call them. I'd try craigslist classifieds: jobs, housing, personals, for sale, services, community, events, forums or The State | Homepage first..

Brandon: We wanted to rent a lake house so that we could truly get a feel for the living experience. Could you suggest an area that is more convenient to shopping, etc.? Since this is our first visit, we'd appreciate all the help we get. So far, we've seen listings in Irmo, Chapin, Prosperity and Gilbert. Is there one area that's easier to navigate? Thanks for the leads. We're really excited to make the visit.

The place in Irmo would be a lot closer to civilization if you want to go shopping or out to eat. The other places would be quieter, but further from activities.

Is Gilbert Safe?
Hello Again: Can anyone tell us about Gilbert? We'll be down for a week in June and are still looking for a cottage / cabin on the lake. We saw something that can accommodate, but I've read some alarming info on one of these threads saying that crime and drugs are up in Gilbert! Our concern now is if this area is safe? I appreciate all feedback.

Yes, Gilbert is safe. I have a co-worker that lives on the lake in the Gilbert area and loves it there. They may have been referring to Gilbert High School, if anything. I can't imagine there would be many general problems in such a small town other than having nothing to do.
