Greetings from the Dayton, Ohio area! We saw in our local Dayton Daily News where Columbia has hired Percy Mack to be your School Superintendent from the Dayton City Schools. In all fairness, being the head of a big-city school district is no easy job. You walk into a mess and, no matter what you do, you leave with the schools STILL in a mess. I find it difficult to imagine dealing with the problems any school district faces, much less that of a larger district like Columbia's.
Mr. Mack presided over a school system that serves a city that is, as some would believe, almost on life-support. Like many Rust Belt cities, Dayton faces a declining industrial base, flight to the suburbs and many other issues. But during his tenure, the school district has dealt with a school board that thinks it should work in Taj Mahal-like facilities while school buildings, disappointing student performance and a failed school levy. A new levy will be on the ballot this November. Mr Mack decides to leave right in the middle of all this for "family" reasons"... I wonder if there really isn't an "Old Boy Network" among School Surperintendents. They just shuffle around from city to city, collecting their salaries and taking a nice retirement when the time comes... Good luck, Columbia... |

Thanks for the post; I'll give him the benefit of the doubt until I find out something to the contrary.

Exactly. I think sometimes people want to change in a very short time what has been years of systemic educational neglect. It's going to take time.

Noire, that's probably the best tack to take. I suppose taxpayers in ANY city expect the School Superintendent to work miracles with so many things beyond his/her control. I hope Mr. Mack works out well for you.
