Hi, I'm a liberal, white, college educated woman who is thinking of taking a job in Sumter. Are tree-hugging, pro-choice, patchoulli-wearing, pro-gay marriage, anti-war Democrats likely to be accepted at all? We have a fairly high tolerance for views other than our own (that is, conservative), but will we be completely alone socially or, worse, likely to encounter public diapproval? Any information you can provide would be helpful.
Thanks.

In a word (two words): not really.

Folks like that exist in Sumter, sure. They're rare, though. Try the artsy crowd. Anyone affiliated with the art gallery or the little theatre is bound to be more up your alley.

In addition to being a smallish Southern town, Sumter is a military town. That makes for a doubly conservative mix many times.

Sumter is fairly conservative, but it wouldn't be the worst place in the world for you and Columbia is only 45 minutes away.

Yes, socially I think you will be completely alone. I don't think Sumter is for you at all. Just my opinion.

Yeah, I'd look elsewhere.

This is a prime example why no one should ever let politics rule over who they are. You limit yourself too much when you do in order to keep in lockstep with those of your political ilk. Such a shame!

And show me a liberal who has a "high tolerance for for views other than their own" and i'll show you beachfront property in Nebraska.

Um. I'm pretty liberal. And I like to think I'm pretty tolerant. Family reunions would be impossible if I wasn't.

Can we take a look at the property now?

Patchouli - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

If you've been to anywhere that's fairly hippie-friendly, you've smelled it.

There are lots of places in Five Points where you can find patchoulli.
