i lived in cleveland hights ohio andi can tell you from personal experience that it is far more expensive to live there than here, i've also live in highland park ill north of chicago and i can tell you that it is far morre expensive there as well. maybe i was living in the wrong places in the mid-west. there is a nice water park at the south hope center, not the best area but kids of all races are at this park and police are there most of the time i go by there and it is a safe place. we dont haave it all here being so close to columbia and florrence but we are getting there but just moving too slow.

You do realize that becoming like Columbia or Florence also means destroying everything that is different about Sumter?

Paving over the last bits of rural land, severe crowding, etc. The only reason to favor such development (which would also chase away Shaw AFB by encroachment) is if you have land to sell.

Advice for people who like cities:
Go find ones to live in instead of wrecking nice rural communities.

Probably moving to Sumter next summe. We've been living in small(very small) town s. central florida. Everything in town revolves around churches. There are few activities that aren't church driven. Being originally from a small northern town, this came as quite a shock. Is Sumter the same way or are people more open to those who aren't regular attendee's?? It seems that with Shaw's influence and the fact that folks have retired there after living around the country it would be a bit more worldly on this topic. We're in our mid 50's, are active and might move to a golf course setting. A beer and wings here and there is our kind of nite out...any comments??? thanks, pd

There are a lot of churches around, but I've only been asked a few times in 4+ years if I belong to one.

thanks for the quick comeback. Almost all of the people I met and did work for(I'm a self employed painter) asked if I had a church home yet?? The H.S. baseball team that I volunteered to help coach not only said the lords prayer before and after games, but the coach brought in a presentation on laptop saying to not play for the school but to play for the lord...that was the end of me, though I did finish out the season. I figured that Sumter was a tad more openminded. Thanks again. pd

I have personally never been asked if or where I go to church since I moved to Sumter. Of course, I live in a diverse area of a neighborhood and given your occupation you will come into contact with more people than I would. I remember driving out 521 once and saw a hindu (or buddist maybe) temple on one side of the road and directly across from them a Kingdom Hall of Jehova witnesses. I think people seem to be pretty tolerant here compared to where I'm originally from.

I met a few neighbors and the ones behind us I met through the fence. Kinda told here the story about the coaching. It turns out she's a church goer and asked if I'd like to try her's. I told her I'm not into church but she could ask my wife. Course she doesn't go either, but she was raised that way. I've corrupted her after 35 years. Looking forward to a return visit this weekend for 4 or 5 days(2 road days) and a final trip up in mid June. Moving truck might be a few days behind, but I've moved some beds and some recliners along with a t.v.. What else do ya need. A fridge for the beer and a t.v...some takeout chinese and I'm good to go. Oh yea..my good humidor is already up there full of stogies. A simple man of simple pleasures. pd

There's a tobacco shop on N. Laffayette/15 that I've been meaning to check out. Usually I'll just pick up a stick at The Cigar Box on Rosewood (Cola) on my way home, but this place looks decent.

The one on Broad St isn't that great as the door to the walk-in humidor is loose and gapped and the humidifier looks to be empty most times I'm there.

Ceezer...been ordering cigars on line for years. First JR.com and now Famous Smokes out of Pennsylvannia. Of course if you buy'm one at a time, the local store is great. If you like a few a week check out the websites for these 2. I've found Famous to be really good with a wide variety. JR runs some good deals as well. pd

I've been to the JR site but don't order online since I don't smoke that often (once a week, usually, thanks to my nagging daughter...). I was at the Statesville J&R today, though, so I picked up a few sticks while I was there

Also, while I'm here: Yay for 5 Guys in Sumter!
