The area immediately around Columbia College is one of those areas at night, but the campus is regularly patrolled by their police department and access is controlled. I don't live far from there and I don't have problems in my neighborhood.

I do like the fact they have their own police dept. on campus. Thanks for the info. I guess I'll be a regular visitor.

Many state universities have their own police department. In my experience it's a mixed bag. On the one hand you have police officers who are dedicated to campus issues, on the other hand crime on campus rarely happens entirely on campus... there is generally an off campus component. When something happens on campus and spills over into the community or vice versa the campus and city police can get territorial about hteir jurisdiction.
