I've been to USC's main campus on three different occasions and have seen several of the "accursed" flags. Granted, they were mostly on students and vehicles, but present none the less.
There are (were?) annual hunting/fishing expos on the fairgrounds with plenty of flags, as well as plenty at just about every USC game. I haven't quite figured out how being a college student makes you change in so many ways, quite frankly I think that is an overstated stereotype... But then again, you always have spoiled, Che t-shirt wearing hippies, as well as pompous, flag waving, pro-life rednecks. I suppose it is all relative though, someone who studies Business will obviously have different views than someone who studies in Liberal Arts...
You can't beat the stereotypes though.

^ That's interesting because I graduated from USC in 1986 and have attended virtually every home football and basketball game since then and I could probably count on 2 hands the number of times I've seen someone on campus or at a game sporting that flag in any way in the last 26 years since I was a freshman at USC.

Come on. You want to make Columbia and the University to look good, but you can't expect people to believe that there's only been less than 10 instances of Confederate flags on campus since 1986. These students don't ONLY come from cities across the South and the Country. Like you said, you'll see it in rural areas, and USC draws a lot of students from rural areas. After all, isn't one of their core missions to offer all South Carolinians an attainable education, not just ones who come from Columbia (which isn't home to people who fly the flag)?

The confederate flag is everywhere in this state. You can't hide it or lie about it.

We should perpetuate it so the southern riff-raff don't move north? I don't think it's the winters that they're scared of.
Funny, now that I think about it, I have lots of southern friends and neighbors mostly from places like Richmond, Raleigh and Charlotte but also from TN, GA, AL, and MS but the only person I know from SC is my sister-in-law.

I personally have seen the flag all over the united states. I have seen it in NYC, as well as rural NY - flying high just as it is in the backwoods of SC. I have also seen it flying high in LA. I even saw it in Pocatello, ID. I could care less if you have it flying from your car or hanging in your room or flying out in the front of your house - to each his own as long as no one is getting hurt and you are not bashing people on the head with the flag pole. I have Clemson stuff flying..but, I still don't like the flag on the state grounds without the Irish/Swiss/Italian Flag..since that is my heritage.

What is even more interesting is that you claim there are virtually no flags at the football games, yet the tailgate parties and the game are filled with them. Maybe you are so used to them that you don't notice? I've seem them all over the boats of USC students on Lake Murray, and I've seen several people all over campus with them on their shirts.
The funny thing is that the top 10 places that Columbia residents have moved from are ALL rural areas of SC. Yet still you would have me believe that they drop their "country" ways and turn into the stereotypical college student?
I know you like to make Columbia and USC look like a progressive paradise, but both sides of this need to be covered. It isn't fair to ommit parts that you don't like (nothing personal waccamatt).

The county to county relocation maps done by a newspaper in Charlotte, the statistics are from the IRS (2000-2005 data).
The top ten places of origin for Richland County [Columbia] transplants (by county) are:
1. Lexington, SC (22,000)
2. Kershaw, SC (2,500)
3. Sumter, SC (2,186)
4. Charleston, SC
5. Fairfield, SC
6. Orangeburg, SC
7. Greenville, SC
8. Cumberland, NC
9. Mecklenburg, NC
10. Florence, SC
The only non-SC/GA/NC transplant group with any significant value is Bell, TX (853) [Houston]. The New Yorkers start coming in about halfway down the list, with around 400 being the most from any one city. However, these numbers merely include taxpayers, and families are not included. California, Kansas, New Jersey, Florida, and Maryland are all in the 150-200 range. Washington and Oregon are included but in very small numbers (but growing).
Charlotte, the "transplant mecca" also receives most its newcomers from within North Carolina. New York does make the top 10 for that city, however.
Greenville, SC receives mostly from SC and NC. Counties in Florida, California, New York, and New Jersey are all very close to the top 10.
Clearly the "Northerners are taking over" phenomenon is a farce. Growth can be attributed to our own migration to the city and suburban centers of South Carolina.

I said that I had seen less than 10, not that there weren't ones I hadn't seen - don't twist my words. Other than the one at the State House, I hardly ever see any.
