Yea, you didn't know (sarcasm rearing it's ugly head)
As a Yankee transplant myself (from CT), there is a lot of love and heritage here, re: the confederacy and the South in general.

Those of you who are transplants to the South need to read a book entitled "Heritage of the South" by Tim Jacobson. Then maybe you'll understand. As a Southerner I can go to Kentucky, Florida, Virginia, Alabama or Tennessee and there is a bond and acceptance there that you don't experience in the North, Midwest or West. It's a southerner thing and you have to be a Southerner to understand it.

That is exactly why I'm interested in the area - I'm an "outdoors" kind of person, and love the idea of the parks along the rivers, kayaking, there's a rowing club there (took that up last year) and I'm dealing with the "yahoos" here while riding my bike on roads without shoulders or bike lanes - I can't imagine it would be any worse there - but I do look forward to replacing prairie with trees! And NO blowing winds like here, usually 15 - 20 mph daily.

As a transplanted Yankee who's lived in the south and west mostly in my adult years, I love the diversity of scenery and people. It's taught me tolerance and patience, as well as opened my eyes to dealing with people who think differently than I do. I welcome this, and especially enjoyed my time in Germany for this very reason. It is by choice that I've made the south my home and I've learned to blend in quite well.

very interesting
I have enjoyed this post. I just found out that I may be moving here from Las Vegas in January. I am a jewish, poilsh, puerto rican married t0 a black woman we have 2 girls 13 and 10. Seeing how you guys openly dicuss race issues is refreshing. I have also noticed the constant reference to strong family values and hospitality. That is what we want. One thing I have noticed in this thread and another one in the Colombia section I read about race is that most people need to stop using the color of ones skin as the first and most important indicator of the character. The beautiful thing about our country is that it blends the best of all peoples. There are brilliant, funny , wonderful, revolutionary people and disgusting, racist, bigoted, stupid, and ignorant malcontents in every and all people. Judge not by skin color but by color of character (think Dr. M.L.K. said something like that) and love your neighbor as yourself (Jesus I think! lol ) and we would all get along better. Oh throw in some patience and understanding(from my life experience). One question though, what is a troll
