LOL - this is TEXAS!!!!!!!!! If you aren't "native" you ain't squat! While TX is boastful of its great economy, affordability, and business climate, there are still those who deeply resent the influx of "outsiders" and if you happen to be "native," you will feel it! I have never felt that anywhere else as strongly as here, and I lived in FL - loved it! And southerners in general.

HopDude, if it's any comfort at all I totally get what you're saying.

This area isn't for everyone, as is the case with anywhere I suppose.
For me, it's like a nice, pretty dress that just doesn't fit. Nothing horribly wrong with it, just not for me.
I'm not the "big city type", probably as southern as a deep fried Snickers bar at the state fair...however, even I can't seem to find my place here.

Thank you for the comments on being depressed here...my God I thought it was just me!

We moved here (Lexington) from NJ 9 months ago and we're going back in a few months. Long story short: the "dream" didn't live up to the reality.
I won't use this opportunity to bash SC (I've already done that on other threads). But I WILL say this about Columbia: It's the cleanest city I've ever seen.

New Jersey's snow the other day was enough to keep me down south.

Maybe that's the problem...I live in Lexington. Heaven forbid a body should walk into a store of any kind without being all "spit and polished". You've allowed your lawn to grow over 3 inches tall!!?? DEAR God in Heaven, we're committed blasphemy! YOU don't attend a "certain" church?! BLASPHEMY!
Anywho...

I've friends in/ near Columbia. Some are in the nearby Guard base. As mentioned, there's NOTHING to do in Columbia.

The nightlife is extremely limited. And boring. A hoot if you enjoy Bud, Coors and other like products.

Restaurants; please.. the Chinese haunts mentioned are mediocre. Columbia has the typical grease pits and garbage chain restaurants (Chili's, Applebee's et al.,) you find in any city unwilling/ unknowing of anything to allure people with a pallet. There is not 1, ONE Japanese/ sushi restaurant worth returning to. In a 120,000 + city!

Yeah, there is the zoo. Though to be fair, do you really need to see the zoo more than say, twice a year?

Sure, there's the 'lake' and man-made walking trails, parks and such...

The city is reminiscent of the movie, 'Home Fries'. BOOORING.

Columbia, SC is geared more for the 55 + age group.

Like hopdude had mentioned, a 'nice' city though don't anticipate to be awed or surprised by its 'Je ne sais pas'.
