Default Why White?

We are considering a job opportunity in the Columbia area and I have been looking at available real estate in the areas of Lexington and Columbia. One recurring thing that pops out at me is the use of white cabinetry in the kitchen area. We are currently living in East Tennessee and white cabinets are the exception rather than the rule. Is there any particular reason for this color choice? Also I have a question about swimming pools. How many months of the year can you reasonably expect to use one?

I can only think of one person I know that has white cabinets. Maybe it's a lake thing. I think you can reasonably use a pool here from May 1 to October 1, sometimes a little longer.

I can say that when i moved here to Savannah...white cabinets were in every house on our "to see" list. I personally can't stand them, but as fate would have it...the house that the misses liked best had white cabinets in it. After 2yrs of me hinting about it she has finally saw the light {thanks HGTV} and want to change them now...but now that i've had to put a "white stove, refrigirator, microwave, toaster, dish rack, sink and dish washer" in the kitchen i don't really want to change the cabinets now. I say this because i know she will want stainless steal appliances once we do and i refuse to rid my house of appliances barely 2yrs old....I think she'll want the sink, floor tiles and countertops done first...i just now have to make sure the color scheme will fit white cabinets for the time being.

Because the white cabinets are the cheapest. When we were home shopping here several years ago, all the houses had "custom" cabinets. By custom, I mean they were cut and put together from plywood and then stained a dark color to try and hide the fact that there were raw exposed edges, corners & edges that weren't square, edges that weren't level, etc. Our house had the same cabinets, along with a trailer-sized drop-in stove (all of which has been replaced).

All in the name of maximizing profits...

White was trendy for a while, like granite countertops are now.

You see it more in the newer homes or the older homes that have been refurbished. It comes down to taste in newer homes. In older homes you see it usually because someone did it to update the house to make the older, darker wood look newer.
