Even in rural areas it is no buig deal. Expect a little teasing, but it'll all be in a good nature.

As everyone said and I will reiterate it's a non-issue. I took the attitude when moving here that I am only going to embrace and not judge and it really is working for me. Everyone has been overwhelmingly accepting. I was called the "Y" word several times but it was in jest. Now I'm from Jersey and I can't hide it at all (no matter how hard I try). I'm more of a novelty than anything else. Even in the rural areas everyone has been so kind inviting me for dinner and such. The one thing I learned is not to wear heels everywhere I go...but you will not have that problem (but if you do, "you go girl"). The people I've met are either as sarcastic as I am or worse (which was a little shocking) and made me feel right at home.

I've lived here for almost a year, and people I've met in Columbia (wed. night run club at Riverfront Park, etc.) consider northerners who relocate to here to be a curiosity, if anything. The people are great, to say the least. I love it here.
I was expecting a little hostility amongst some, but, such is not the case. Their sincerity in wishing us ex-pats well, is not fake. Only hostility I've ever encountered from any Southerner was from a few while i was in the service, and they were from the deepest South.
Some locals in Columbia tend to have a lowered self esteem about their city. They love to hear outsiders say how great it is, for a small metro.
It's laid back, for the most part, especially around Charleston, Greenville, Aiken, and some other small metros. I mean, it's almost freakish, to us Northerners.
Took me a while, but, I think I've assimilated well, here, in the South. I'm still getting used to how friendly people are in public. I've had to let my guard down, so to speak, which I knew was going to be an issue after my wife and I came down here for interviews, last year.

Dont bother! This city sucks, Im warning you. I have lived here for 10 years and this is not a good place to move. There isnt even much to do here. Perhaps you should try another city that is good for young single proffessionals, because Columbia is NOT it.

^^I disagree completely. I had that attitude when I moved out of here (I was born and raised in Lower Richland) but saw how wrong I was when I went to other places.
I love Colatown.

I disagree also. There is plenty to do in Columbia and the city is full of young professionals. I find it interesting that someone would live somewhere for 10 years if they don't like it and they claim there's nothing to do. Columbia has sports, nightlife, museums, theatre, concerts, a large variety of dining opportunities, shopping and tons of outdoor activities.

I disagree as well, for a city/metro the size of Columbia, you will have a tough time finding a place that offers more.
