If you stay in the right areas Sumter County is actually fairly peaceful, but the Uniform Crime Report isn't mistaken. As the economy declines things will get worse.
My previous post wasn't in "poor taste", but it wasn't Politically Correct, so let me fix that:
Sumter is full of 100-percent wonderful people, but the wonderful people driving the impressive crime rates are wonderfully concentrated in certain areas of peace and lovingkindness.
If all that love is too much to handle, the county has a variety of choices. I retired here and don't plan to move. There are good reasons to live here, but promoting the whole country is dishonest.
It's a good place to live cheap on an outside income. Its economy is shrinking and isn't likely to grow back for a long time due to the permanent loss of manufacturing jobs. It's a cultural desert, but for me that's a plus. If you want culture check out Charleston. If you are a government employee or G.I., Sumter has plenty of current and retired government and military people. Live among them and you won't have a problem. Areas like Dalzell near Shaw are quite nice.
