Orangeburg isn't culturally diverse nor is it progressive. You will not like it at all.

I would say O'burg is diverse but not progressive. As for likes or dislikes, I won't presume to decide what someone will or won't like.

As practically raised there (Born in 83, Moved with parents in 87, left in 08) I would say that "The Burg" has the building blocks to be both progressive but requires a catalyst. There are 2 HBCUs there and practically in the middle of Columbia and Charleston. Orangeburg has a pretty diverse population from different walks of life. It may look a little bland on the surface, but if you bite into it, the taste may surprise you for the better. I wouldn't say that there's nothing there to like at all.

I was in Orangeburg about a month ago and it was better than I expected but until all these promised industrial parks and huge housing developments along Lake Marion kick in, it doesn't offer much. And development may worsen it. But the PEOPLE were fantastic.

As a native of Orangeburg County, Orangeburg has a ways to go in a lot of areas but has great potential. I think the next several years will see some of this potential become actualized.

How many asian families do you know in orangeburg? how about hispanics? any italians, jews, or any other melting pot citizens you know that live in orangeburg. No. If you think Orangeburg is diverse, you must be from the woods.
You are right, I shouldn't presume what other people will like.

Orangeburg SC has tried to, and has become, Little NY. The drug corridor between I-26 and I-95 is half way between NY and Miami. Drug planes land in farmed fields. Kids at SC State have been killed over drugs. The locals were in the trade, and selling dope to cops in the woods. I know because I interviewed the criminals. Go to the gas stations at night and watch. It is prob the worst place to live, shop, and have a family. I suggest you go up toward Calhoun County, which is toward Swansea. St. Matthews is a nice little town. They had their own dog fighting/drug drama when a former chief of police was there, but stay away from Orangeburg.

Gaston is also convenient and the town before Swansea. There is always good and bad places no matter where you live. We live in the country with close to 5 acres of land and yes we are outside of Gaston. There isn't really anything here and we drive to Columbia for everything. We can easily hit either I 26 or I 77 and be at most places in Columbia with in 20-30 minutes. My husband works in down town Columbia and his drive is about 20-30 minutes.

I'm not proclaiming Orangeburg to be some sort of drug-free paradise--far from it--but it is far from being SC's version of Colombia as you are suggesting. As long as you're not involved in that lifestyle, you will be fine. That goes for wherever one might decide to live.
