If you live west of Beltline you can conceivably go wherever you need to on a bicycle. I used to when I lived off Kilbourne and Rosewood - never cranked my car more than twice a week.

Columbia politically is a stiff-necked, provincial little backwater that votes consistently republican even when it is in no one's best interests (except for the Mayor), but there is also a large group of people, especially around USC, who are a little easier to deal with if, say, you voted for Obama and want to actually admit it and talk about it.

What else are you looking for in a city and what is your tolerance for commuting pain?
I'm not sure where you get your information from, but Columbia and Richland County are both overwhelmingly Democratic strongholds. Every single county-wide office holder in Richland County is a Democrat and Obama won Columbia by over 30% in the Presidential election and Richland County by approximately 29%. For you to make the above statement, are you sure you live here?

Been here 50 years. The democrats must hide really well. Nothing but republicans on both sides of the family and not but a couple of dems on the East side that I know of.

It must be your neighborhood, but Richland County has been heavily Democratic for years.

Obama said to erase party lines and concentrate on the issues. One reason he got my vote.

Downtown Columbia, maybe. When I hear "Columbia", I think "Greater Columbia Area", which to me is Eastover to Lexington.

Sorry for the confusion I caused.

Ummm, I don't really know any people who choose to be friends or not friends with someone based on which candidate they support. People are people and you'll be treated well here as long as you don't give them a reason to not treat you well.
