Default New BCBS employee, want apartment near

I will be working at BCBS and would like a 1br/1ba apartment near. I've heard that the NE area is pretty nice. But I've read reviews online that seem to make me wonder (apartmentratings .com and apartmentreviews .net). I will be going there in a few weeks to do some searching myself. I don't want to spend more than $750/mo for the rent. I rather it be lower, but if I have to pay more (closer to $750) to have peace of mind of being in a safer/quieter area, I will. I would like to stay within a 5-7 mile radius of the BCBS area. I'd like to be close to shopping/restaurants, but doesn't necessarily have to be walking distance. My hotel that I'll be staying at while searching is the Hampton Inn NE on Barbara Dr off Two Notch Rd. Any help/suggestions would be appreciated.

Which BCBS building are you in? Tower, Clemson Rd, Percival, Farrow Rd, Broad River Rd, etc?

That would help in choosing something that might be more ideal for your situation

Also, if you know the names of apartments rather than just areas of town, it would be much appreciated, as I haven't been to the city other than straight to the zoo and back. I would like to do some background checking on these places before I get there. These are the few that I've looked at so far: Carrington Place at Wildewood, Oak Grove at Wildewood, Arbors at Windsor Lake, Crowne Lake Apartments, Atrium Place. Any others would be appreciated and your comments/suggestions on these places. These are about at the top of my price-point. Thanks.

Well both, the Atrium and the Tower, are on Faraway but they're right next to each other so that's not an issue. If you're at Percival then it's just up the road, so that's not a problem either. We at least know what area to look at.

Try "The Keswick" on Sparkleberry. Their number is (888) 764-9362 so you could try calling about vacancy. 1BR prices range $665-790. Sparkleberry is a good location because it's going to be about 1.5 miles (if that) from the Percival building and about 6 miles from Faraway. It's also going to put you on the back side of Two Notch so you'd only be around 3 miles or so from shopping like Target/Best Buy/PetCo/Kroger/Publix/etc (and much more) and then 4-4.5 miles from Village at Sandhills.

Even right there near the apartments on Sparkleberry is a San Jose, an Italian place, a coffee shop, Zaxby's, Walgreens, and some other stuff so you could walk across the street if you wanted to grab some dinner.

If it was me moving here to a new city for an established job, this is where I'd want to be. Easy access to I20 and some other main roads to do a little exploring, quick access to work, and immediate access to some retail/commerce so that you aren't overwhelmed and flustered trying to find things to do and worried about getting lost trying to find a grocery store.

Here's another one on Sparkleberry - "Spring Valley" - (866) 915-5489. They don't show any 1BRs but have a 2BR listed for $561.

I don't know all the roads in the area as I just work in Columbia, but what I did was went to Apartments.com | Find Apartments for Rent, Houses, Condos and Townhomes | Rental Listings and clicked 'SC' on the map. Click on "Western SC", then click "Central Columbia". On the screen that allows you to check communities, I checked options 2, 5 & 6 as these would offer the easiest access to getting to/from work. I checked 1BR with a max of $750/mo and that returned 23 results.

It might be easier if you follow those steps and look into a couple of them, call them and check on availability, then come back here and post which ones you have it narrowed down to (with the road names) so that the folks here who *are* familiar with them could offer their insight.

My sister just moved into Carrington Place after relocating back here from 10 years in Virginia. She loves it there and has been quite satisfied with the apartment from a security aspect, the location is perfect, and she is locked in at $899. for a two BR, two bath unit on the back side. Not the cheapest for rental property but she is older and wanted someone on staff for maintenance and no yard to maintain, etc.
I can't vouch for any of the other complexes you listed, but there are a lot of military families in that area, and hence a lot of moving in and moving out. I have lived in Shandon, Rosewood, West Columbia and now I live in the St. Andrews area and work downtown. I wouldn't trade where I live for anyplace else.

Thanks for the insight. Anybody else have comments on the other places I listed? Or any other places to suggest?
