Neighborhoods and schools in the columbia area
We may be relocating to the Columbia area and hoping to get some feedback on neighborhoods and or school systems surrounding the area. I have a 6 yr old son with down syndrome so I'm interested in any experiences with the special education system in SC. thanks

Are there any neighborhoods you already have in mind? Or do you know what your price range is for buying/renting a home, or where you will be working? There are some locals on this board who can give you feedback on specific communities.

We really don't have any area in mind but someone had mentioned lexington and Camden. The job my husband is considering is in sales with business in Columbia & Charleston....as well as Agusta, Savannah & Macon GA. Guess we just wouldn't want anything to north. Wanting to stay 510K or less. Open to any suggestions. thanks

Lake Carolina is a nice community, and has Richland two schools. The Blythewood area is nice and is also in Richland two. Greenhill Parish, Woodcreek Farms, and Longcreek Plantation would also be worth checking into. Lexington has some great communities and schools as well. Camden is in Kershaw county and I have heard good things about the schools there as well. I would recommend speaking with the schools to learn how they handle special needs children though.

Absolutely. We'e hoping to learn from others who may habe children with special needs. Either way, we'll be doing our home work via in-person interviews. The communities/areas we've heard the most about are in Lexington, Lake Carolina and Camden. Camden may be a bit too far out, but we'll look there none the less.
Youmention Richland two schools. Any idea how they compare with Lexington? We're looking on Great Schools website for some guidance and any others thoughts in this forum would also be appreciated.

I have friends that have children in Richland two schools, and they all seem to be very happy with the schools. My wife has two nephews that attend school in Lexington, and they are equally pleased. It really depends on where you want to live. You should be able to find what you are looking for in either place. Camden is further out, as far as further away from serious shopping is concerned, but you may find that you like it. It would really come down to you having a chance to come here and tour around looking at the different areas and finding out what fits you best.
