Default Moving to Columbia this summer and need some advice!

Hi all,
I'm a 32 year old female health professional and new Air Force member who is moving to the Columbia area. I am single, interested in living in a unique, interesting neighborhood (renting), and would love some advice on where I should look. I would like to be as close to downtown as possible.

I am moving from Boston and I have an interest in anything cultural. In addition, any tips/insider info on living in Columbia is greatly appreciated!

Lauren, welcome to Columbia. There are a number of neighborhoods in-town that will fit your bill, but a lot depends on your budget and whether you want to rent an apartment or a house. There is a link to my website in my profile and you'll find photos of a lot of different in-town neighborhoods on there.

As far as cultural recommendations - Nickelodeon Theater is the "art-house" type theater in Columbia. It is located on the corner of Main and Pendleton, just south of the State House. You'll also want to check out the Columbia Museum of Art, the SC State Museum, Trustus Theatre, Workshop Theatre, Longstreet Theatre, McKissick Museum at USC, the Koger Arts Center and the State House. I'm sure others will have further cultural recommendations.

Thanks for your reply Waccamatt...let me be a little more specific. My budget is between $700-900 a month. I would rent either an apartment or house, however; I'm not interesting in gated communities. I'm thinking apartments that are more house-like (hardwood floors, driveway). Can you recommend some specific areas? Thanks and great website!

There are 2 old cotton mills in the Olympia area that have been renovated into loft apartments. You could probably get a studio there in your price range. You should also look in the Five Points/Wales Garden/Shandon/Melrose Heights areas at some duplexes and quadruplexes to see if there are some "for rent" signs out. Also check the classifieds online in The State Newspaper, Craigslist and Free Times. A few rental companies that I know of have some rentals in those areas - The Wolfe Co., Hubbard Group Realtors and Furman Fulmer Co.

Here are a few links:
