Suggestions on resumes
Hi I don't get on here very often, but I'm noticing a trend, and this seems like as good a place to make some suggestions as any. I know the job market is bad lately. I'd like to make some suggestions for sending in a resume.
I work for a small company, I'm only a receptionist, but one of my tasks is to file the resumes for the owner. Some thoughts on resumes...
1. Use a standard font, arial, calibri, along those lines. If you think a different font will help get you noticed, remember that not all computers have the same programs. My Word program is old, some of the resumes people email to me may as well be in Japanese.
2. Be clear on your OBJECTIVE. Rewrite that sentence to fit the job you're interested in. I got one that was interested in being a member of the Staples team. If you're too lazy to rewrite one sentence, what will you be like on the job? Also, be clear about which position you want. We hire in different deptartments, if your resume isn't clear about the job you want, it goes in the no experience folder. I kept 5 different resumes on my computer when I was hunting for a job.
3 MOST IMPORTANT!!! Put your name and contact information on EVERY page of your resume!!! Papers get mixed up. When you email it, name the document "yournameresume". Very few come in like this. Even with a fax, put your name on each page. If someone else gets the faxes off the machine, papers get passed all over.I took this task over last month. Someone had mixed up papers, and I couldn't place about 10 resumes with their front pages.
4. I wouldn't recommend responding to a job posting asking someone to contact you without sending a resume. About 15 other people asked to be contacted AND sent in their resume.
Just a few thoughts, I don't think people think about what it's like on the other side.
