Wow you had the part time village of "Sandfordville"....what's the name of this one... "Cobleburg"? ...Actually Mayor Bob has probably done more to address the homeless problem than many of his predecessors....

It is the region in NE South Carolina that is part of the Pee Dee River basin.. I guess more generally Florence, Darlington, Dillon, Marion, Chesterfield, and Marlboro Counties.. but I have heard Horry, Williamsburg, Lee, Sumter and Georgetown included before as well..though their inclusion may refer more with river's basin than actual regional identification

This video reminds a bit of the SNL skit from years ago where Chris Farley talked about "living in a van down by the river".

Thanks, Woodlands. Trying to learn about the area, and I appreciate your help.

Wow, I had no idea; of course I don't frequent that part of the river - it is very isolated. If they are on one of the islands in the Saluda River, I hope the ground is high enough when the water rises.

That is known as a "hobo village." A friend of mine annually travels to Florida to live in a large one of these. One or two people in the "village" work for a few weeks to provide funding for the alcohol, cigarettes, and other "necessities," then they trade off and a couple other people work for a few weeks, and so on. Many of his friends have died over the years from various health problems, mostly related to drinking an exhorbitant amount of alcohol. Apparently the hobo villages in Florida are much larger and include pallet shacks as well as tents. I don't know of any such places in the Upstate, but during this economic depression, I wouldn't be surprised to learn about their existence here as well.

A lot of us may be living in these if the depression is a long one. I like it here in the Columbia area but I am heading to Florida once I can sell my house.
