Parking is usually a problem on the beaches, esp if you arrive mid-morning on a good-weather day.
Remember that beach sand is not so nice to get stuck in.
And please pay attention to those danger signs around Breach Inlet.
They are there for a reason.
Hope ya have fun.

parking in a lot and taking a stroll to the beach isn't a prob for us; we never drove on beach at Hilton, and didn't when we stayed in St Pete Beach FL a couple years ago. thx for heads up though

For convenience and a good beach experience that's not too crowded like Myrtle Beach, but close to historic Charleston, you can't beat Folly Beach.

There are Charleston county beach parks at Folly, IOP, and Kiawah. It costs a few bucks to get in, but there's plenty of parking, lifeguards, umbrella rentals, showers, food, rest rooms...etc.

Compared to traffic volume, the Folly Beach Co. Park is woefully undersized re: parking.
It's also located on the "wrong" end of the island for the best waves (ie, The Washout), and the prices alone would indicate to any native that it's set-up for the kind tourists to which (in the days of my wayward youth) we sold a stinking, dead, horseshoe crab as a barracuda.
It's a far better bet to either arrive early, or wait until around noon (when people get hungry) and try to hook a spot then, or else hit the few spots that are sometimes open of which locals know.
But a caveat: Ever since the 70's, a large chunk of Folly's municipal budget has come from parking violations.
That's Folly.
Don't know the current situation on Kiawah.
Don't care to know the current situation on Coney Island, South Unit (also known as The Isle Of Plams).

Which beach is closest to get to from Sumter? I have been to Myrtle several times, but that is the only beach in SC that I have been to.

I would say that the Charleston beaches are about the same distance from Sumter as Myrtle Beach, take US 15 south to I-95 and over on I-26 to Charleston.
