Default Is Little Joes BBQ Still In Columbia? Oh Please Say "Yes!"

We only lived in West Columbia for under 2 years from 1964 - 1966, but we really loved it. Unfortunately, my daddy was transferred and being only 17 at the time, I really wanted to see what California was all about. Anyway, there was this small BBQ joint in downtown Columbia and I think maybe another location, named Little Joe's that used a mustard based BBQ sauce that was TO DIE FOR! Their BBQ pork sandwich was THE BEST! Are they still around? I'm taking my Cali kids to the South to discover their roots and want to go by my old high school and haunts and Little Joe's for a bite if it's still there.

People nowadays are fond of Hudson’s Smokehouse, Maurice’s Barbeque, and Shealy's, if the Free Times' Best of Columbia over the last few years is any indication (and it is, since it is decided by a vote of the readers).

O, I C U R N West Columbia, Intergalactic. I used to live on Riverview Drive right above the Saluda. We loved our house, we loved the city, I loved my high school - Columbia is a great area to live in. Now, that you mention Maurice's, I hadn't remembered that name, but I think Little Joe's was tied to it in some way. Do they have that wonderful mustard based BBQ sauce?

Nearly all BBQ places in central South Carolina have a mustard-based sauce, with most having it as their main sauce. In quite a few places they'll give you the stink-eye if you ask for anything other than the mustard-based.

Very interesting info. Thank you. I'm from originally from Tennessee and my people's family recipe is tomato based, and it is fantastic, but the mustard is fabulous as well. Thanks for sharing the information.

Thank you for the info. I bet I'm remembering the Piggy and the sandwich names.
I'm glad to hear Maurice's is still there so when I bring my kids South we can eat there. I have nothing but fond memories of Columbia and it's people. I can't wait to come see it all again. Thanks again.
