When I first moved to Columbia I was thinking about moving to the Main street area. I did see the TAPPS building, as well as some of the other Main street buildings that have apts and condos. The prices were high, but I kind of expected that. What I wasn't expecting was that both the apts and condos were really small. It would be nice to live in that area, but at this point in my life, I am just not willing to downsize (well, not unless it's to live in Manhattan -- and then just give me a futon and coffee table, and I will be good to go ).

I think all of the Capital Places apartment properties are almost fully rented. I'm ready to downsize and move all the way downtown (Main Street, Vista or Five Points), but I'll need more equity before I can afford it.
I took a better photo of the outside of the Arcade this weekend.

Nice photo. Unless someone constructs larger condos on Main Street, I will have to rule-out living in that area. The Five Points area has too many undergrads for my liking. However, the Vista area has some really nice size townhomes, and I know that with Innovista, more are planned to be built. Thus, the Vista area remains a very high (and hot) prospect for me when I choose to buy.

Someone asked where "The Whig" was located earlier in this thread. It is in the basement of this building at the corner of Main and Gervais across from the State House.

Isn't that across the street from the building with the giant pirate hat on it?

Downunder Columbia
I was suffering from nostalgia today and came across this thread about downunder Columbia. I was a bartender at, and for a while managed the Soho Place from 1972-73. It was one of 5 restaurant/bars in the underground. We started when there was only "brown-bagging" and then went to mini-bottles shortly thereafter. If it ever gets re-opened I'll be the first to offer my guest bartender services.

Anybody feel like writing the Wikipedia article for it?

You got me beat on that one.. I remember the Wade Hampton (Hotel) that was on the corner of Main and Gervais where the Capitol Center is located. I remember when it was blown up (imploded) was a big deal.. I watched it on TV and people went scurrying for cover as the dust cloud covered downtown. Once it settled people ran out and grabbed bricks and other momentos from the occasion.. If it were here today... they may have tried to save it.. and may have put the Capitol Center over on Assembly and Gervais or even up on Washington at Assembly( best location on ne corner)..which may have been better locations....if they had kept the Wade. I heard it needed alot of work though

I'm new to the area but wanted to add that I find Main Street very picturesque. The landscaping, median and parking invite a drive or stroll, and I usually take visitors down the street to show it off.

It's quite a beauty and is much to be proud of. I'm not one to obsess about whether Main Street has nighttime activity going on. By history, central business districts at night were for window shopping and strolling under street lanterns. There are several places to window shop now with more in store for the future. If I lived above Main Street I wouldn't want the nighttime shouting and laughing noise going on as it does in the Vista, Five Points and Devine Street entertainment districts. While that sort of vibe will inevitably hit Main Street with more establishments like The Whig, the White Mule and Mac's on Main, the comparisons of Columbia's Main Street to other whole downtowns have grown very old.
