I have family living in the Toledo area and have visited several times in the past. There are many great old farm towns in that region and if not for the very cold winters, extremely flat terrain, and economy, I would not hesitate to move there for a better job. Shareasmile, you may find the Upstate to be more friendly to Christians with a diverse array of convictions. There are lots of non-denominational churches all over the Upstate, from small to mega-sized. Of course, if you are only interested in the Midlands region of the state, I have no doubt that you will find what you are looking for in the Columbia metro area.

I'll be on vacation this week and probably will not have time to reply until next week, in case you have additional questions or comments.

Also, if you are looking for Buckeye to bash his/her home state, don't count on it. They have been very pro active of going back to Ohio's forum and help people that are moving to Ohio, and giving them information that they need.
Beavercreek is right, I'm not going to bash my native state of Ohio, while it has it's flaws & shortcomings like every other place, it is where I grew up and I have lots of fond memories there. We likely would still be there had it not been for my wife being unable to have a teaching job for more than a year before it got cut, and we were both easily able to find jobs in our professions here in Columbia.

Looking back, we are glad we were 'forced' into exploring relocating, b/c it's been a great, enjoyable experience living here thus far. That said, SC isn't a utopia, yes the weather is fabulous, most of the people are great, and we like the location of Columbia being relatively close to the ocean, mountains and large cities such as ATL & Charlotte; but something has to be done about the inefficiency of the state government. Seemingly nothing gets done when they convene at the state house...the cigarette tax is left at a measley $.07/pack for yet another year, they argue for months over the $700 million of stimulus that Sanford refused, just ridiculous IMO how that process is handled. Plus the unemployment rate is 2nd or 3rd nationally. On a positive note, I saw the headline on the paper today saying SC schools are no longer ranked #50 and have moved up to #37, that's a pretty impressive leap over 3 years.

NE Ohio is struggling, but it's not as bad as the national media likes to portray it. However, we like Columbia, and can't see us moving back to NE Ohio for a long time if ever.

Colonial Christian sounds like a great school, but I would like some input. Also, I would like to find a nice preschool for my 4 year old daughter. We will also be looking for a church right away. We attend a rather large non-denominational church here and I would prefer to attend a somewhat smaller non-denominational church in SC. Thanks!
That's a nice subdivision, I believe it's in Kingston Forest? Very family oriented. You said yr husband would be working in W Columbia. There is a popular school, Grace Christian School in that area. Kingston Forest is near the YMCA - they have lots of activities for kids your age. The regular schools are also highly rated in that area. River Springs Elementary is one of them from my recollection.

Buckeye, if I were to move down south, it would probaly be South Carolina. Like I said before in the Ohio forum, I loved Greenville and what was going on with their downtown. But Ohio is for me, just like it fits millions of other families interests and needs.

I just recieved a job down in Cincinnati, and will be going with the wife next month to go look at lofts in booming downtown Cincinnati.

South Carolina has a lot to offer though, the mountains, the ocean, and cities that are making names for themselves besides Myrtle Beach.

Good subdivision, good area. I used to live in the subdivision next to it. Nice area, you'll probably like it.

I do not live in Cleveland. If you look at a map, or check mapquest, you'll see that Cleveland is NE Ohio. I live in Bellevue, which is about an hour and 20 west of Cleveland. It's not that we are choosing to just pick up and run south. My husband accepted a new job, hence the move. Also, just FYI I am a southern girl. I was born and raised in Florence, AL and moved with my family when my dad was transfered to Ohio and I was 16. As such, I am offended for all southeners out there. Southern hospitality is not limited to people from a certain area, as far as I am concerned. It is extended to all people. Southeners are know for their kindness and polite manners, at least in AL. I don't know, maybe SC is different, or maybe there are just a few people like yourself who group people into little boxes and label them for whatever reason. I would encourage you to get to know some people from Ohio, you might like them!

Thank you to all who have taken the time to post a helpful, informative response! Information from those who are already living in the area is invaluable!
