Nw Ohio family moving to Irmo
My husband, two children and I are going to be moving to SC in July. We have an offer from a friend to rent her house in Irmo on Delaine Woods Drive. Can anyone tell me more about that neighborhood? Is it families, singles, elderly, etc.? Also, I have been looking for a good Christian school for my son who will be in 1st grade in the fall. Colonial Christian sounds like a great school, but I would like some input. Also, I would like to find a nice preschool for my 4 year old daughter. We will also be looking for a church right away. We attend a rather large non-denominational church here and I would prefer to attend a somewhat smaller non-denominational church in SC. Thanks!

Welcome down, as you can tell by my name, we too moved from Ohio (Canton area) about 2 years ago now. We really like the Columbia area, hope you will too!
As for non-denominational churches, you will find that there aren't a whole lot of them in the area, the majority are baptist, but there is a little of everything. The non-denominational church we did find and like is a satellite of Seacoast in Mt. Pleasant-Charleston. There are 2 locations in the Cola metro - one in Irmo on St. Andrews, and the other in NE Columbia off of US-1. We really like it, takes a little getting used too watching the preacher on the video screen every week (each campus has a local pastor, but we all watch the one preaching that weekend in Mt. P), but the music is great. Plus it is smaller - both locations run about 200-300 each - while the main campus in Mt. Pleasant is over 5,000 or so now. So it's like you get the resources of a large church w/the small church feeling, kind of nice. Definitely would be worth your time to visit a time or two.
Best wishes in your move down.

In all honesty though, we've only met one person who was really serious about not liking us 'yankees' in his area, other than that, everyone else just jokes about it if they even mention it, have not found it all to be a problem.

Alright LSU, it is clear that you know nothing about Ohio. You even posted in the Cleveland forum that you have never even been to the city. Let me tell you some things about the city since you are so extremely un educated on this city.
Cleveland:
Has a national park 30 minutes from the downtown area
Has a national orhestra that is called the top 5 (Boston, New York, Philly Cleveland and Chicago)
Has the second largest performing arts district in the country after Broadway
Has one of the most diverse metro park systems in the country
Was named Brookings Institute's best emerging downtown
Has one of the fastest growing downtowns in the country currently at 32.5%
Is home to one of the best art musuems in the country
Is home to a wide range of colleges, offering one of the best college systems for a city
Home to a wide range of fortune 500 companies
A city with 2 million people, and an extensive rapid transit/light rail system (New Orleans doesn't even have light rail)
Currently building a brand new Convention Center/Medical Mart said to be one of the best in North America, and also The Flats East Bank, a half billion dollar mixed use project, and University Circle is full of construction
Home to the world renowed Cleveland Clinic, in Uptown there are construction cranes all over the place.
Cleveland, and Ohio have a lot to offer. Different people like different things/places. Cincinnati, Columbus, and Cleveland all offer many different things to different people, and are extremely diverse cities with people from all over the world. I am currently in Cleveland on business for two weeks, I have not had to drive my car once, except when I went to Westlake ( a western Cleveland suburb) The rapid transit is extremely extensive and nice. I went to Little Italy tonight for dinnner, Cleveland has one of the top ranked Little Italy's in the country.
Ohio is 7th in population, 11.5 million people, but we are 5th per fortune based 500 companies. We bring in some of the most tourism dollars in the country, we have two of the top 25 busiest theme parks in the world, Cleveland and Columbus are both considered emerging global cities, and Cincinnati is currently seeing one of the highest amounts of development in the country. Cincinnati's skyline is dotted with cranes, and was just brought up in a meeting with architects from around the Midwest as being the new "haven" for development in the Midwest taking away that title from Chicago. If Ohio were its own country, we would have the 25th largest economy in the world, between the Netherlands and Belgium. We had a GDP rate of over 450 billion dollars. (Gross Domestic Product)
Ohio is a great state, and you clearly know nothing about it. I don't know what your problem is with Ohio, but I laugh at your stupidity about our state.
I will not bash South Carolina, because it is a great state with great people. I was on business in Jacksonville, and stopped in Blythewood (spelling) north of Columbia, and the people there heard we were from Ohio, and just came up and started a conversation with us. Its a great state with awesome little cities.
Now Louisiana on the other hand, lol don't get me started. I have been all over the country, my job requires it, but New Orleans is by far one of the most impoverished, most discusting cities I have ever been to. There is trash everywhere, and the city smells, and the skyline is pathetic. I even went before Katrina. After was nothing but what felt to be third world in many parts, and the abandonment was everywhere, and I thought Detroit was bad. Louisiana is a very poor state, I believe their per capita income is ranked 49th. BTW, New Orleans was one of the fastest declining cities in the country even before Katrina...
Also, if you are looking for Buckeye to bash his/her home state, don't count on it. They have been very pro active of going back to Ohio's forum and help people that are moving to Ohio, and giving them information that they need.
Did I mention the amount of people that came to Ohio after Katrina? I must have forgot to mention that. There are hundreds of people from SE Louisiana living here in the Cincinnati/Dayton area, and even more living in Columbus. Every single one of them that I have spoken to has no ambition on moving back to Louisiana because they have a much better and more successful life in Ohio. And many of the blacks living in Columbus from Louisiana love it there, maybe that is because Columbus is ranked as one of the best cities for african americans to live and work in.
So, I dont know what your problem about Ohio is, but its quite interesting reading your posts with really no intelligence to back them up.
Have a great night, because tommorow, I will be headed to University Circle here in Cleveland for the grand opening of a new multi million dollar new expansion on one of their booming hospitals.
P.S Cleveland was rated as America's most livable city in 2006, and 26th on a global level. If you need any info on these stats, just ask and I can hook you up.

The OP is from NW Ohio, Cleveland is in NE Ohio.
And that GoBackToOhio site may be a "joke," but a closer look around and you'll see there is a lot of vitriol there.
