Race in NE Columbia - hitting to close to home (Jackson: low income, neighborhoods)

I've been out a lot after dark here in the NE. I've never had any issues or felt threatened or in any type of danger. Your attitude is the same that drives "White flight." Go ahead and move to Lexington, because it won't be long before people there are complaining about the same nonsense. My subdivision in the NE is mostly Black, and of them, most are retired military. They are great, friendly people who made us feel very welcome...unlike the cold ambivalence of our old neighborhood in Florida, (which was 90% White, since it matters...)

Wow, ok, I grew up just outside of Columbia, currently live in New York, and am contemplating moving back to the South (Either SC or NC), and after reading this, I'm putting another check in the NC column.

jkwing, why must you keep highlighting the fact that "black" teens are hanging out at various locations? You mention that you would be just as afraid if the white kids were "looking for a victim?" What gives you the feeling these black teens are looking at you as a victim? Perhpas they are observing your switch to a stiff and frightened posture as you are walking by? I'm sure your discomfort is obvious as you walk by...since you are clearly harbroing something from your 1985 incident...almost 25 years later, you're still frightened? This is really sad.

Many people throughouth their lives are disparaged by groups of people and they don't use it to make such sweeping generalizations. Perhaps you should pass the teens you are so frightened of one day and simply say "good evening" and you'll likely be surprised at a resounding "have a nice day" response.
