Newsweek's top 1500 had 6 Columbia area high schools in it. Kudos to the entire area as this comes just a week after SC moved up to 37th from 50th in public education among states in our country!

#314 - Dutch Fork (Lexington-Richland 5)
#854 - AC Flora (Richland 1)
#913 - Dreher (Richland 1)
#960 - Spring Valley (Richland 2)
#1041 - Irmo (Lexington-Richland 5)
#1138 - Richland NE (Richland 2)

2 from each of the main 3 districts in the area. Interestingly enough to me, w/as many accolades as Richland 2 gets over Richland 1, both AC Flora & Dreher placed better than Spring Valley or Richland NE. This is why I pointed out in my earlier post to not just discount Richland 1 in general.

It may be interesting to see what methodology Newsweek used for these rankings. Of course, I do not mention this to say anything disparaging about any of the schools in Columbia. In fact, I do not know anything about the schools in Columbia. However, I looked at the rankings to see where some of the schools ranked in a state that I used to live in. To my surprise, two schools that have consistently been ranked as the two best schools in that state were ranked much lower (in Newsweek's ranking) than some of the state schools that are not considered to be as good. One thing that could account for this discrepancy is the methodology that Newsweek used. Nevertheless, because this is such a huge discrepancy, it makes me think that Newsweek's methodology is somewhat suspect.

I looked at the Newsweek rankings site, and their rankings are based on the number of students taking Advanced Placement or similar college-credit tests compared to the overall population of the school.

I have always been a fan of SE Cola.. I hope both the City and the County will coordinate the growth in SE by learning from some of the lessons incurred in NE Columbia. SE is served by some of the better schools in District 1 and has multiple access points to downtown Cola, Sumter, and Orangeburg. The growth rate has been steady and not explosive in this section of the region.. which I think is a good thing.

Totally agree, which is why we ultimately chose to move to SE Cola over NE Cola when we relocated here a couple of years ago.

Thanks for all of the information so far, it's been very useful! One other area I have been researching is 'Elgin'...I may take a trip there to check it out. I had lunch at the Red Robin at the 'Village at Sandhills' and the area seems fairly nice....comments?
